The problem with Anadarko was Buffet backed Oxy. Had we got into a bidding war we would have lost out on the $1 Bn breakup fee as well.

The only play would have been to got Buffet and try to do an Oxy / Anadarko / Chevron merger. But that would have taken lots of guts which MKW did not have.

Chevron was 3 times OXY and just walked away from a deal that could bring a lot more growth or at least sustained production for decades. I stead of going after a big fish like Anadarko, they ended up getting a gold fish, just pretty with not much growth in the horizon! They can all brag about the deal but the value is nothing for the size of a company like Chevron. So yeah the CEO made bad decision and time will prove this even more as our production declines with no prospects to keep at our current production levels.

Meh, the dude got lucky by being unlucky.

Basically Anadarko deal fell through and he made a rational decision to not chase OXY and Buffet in a bidding war. He became Wall Street darling due to his discipline. That made him look like a genius in 2020 as OXY stock tanked massively with the weight of the purchase.

Of course flash forward to today and Oxy is reaping the benefits of $100 oil so probably was a bad thing to pass on the deal. We did get Noble on the cheap though as a concillation prize.

We already stopped Gorgon and Wheatstone construction and are nearing the end of FGP. So then we will just be doing low capital projects. So we transitioned to a cash machine.

I think Wirth has been excellent. 2015-2020 were horrible years for the industry in general. He skillfully navigated us through. He certainly isnt perfect - who is? Name one CEO of another Major or even mid-major that you would trade him for?

What are y’all picking on Mike for. Every CEO at CVX has toed the Company line at TownHalls. Keller, Derr, O’Reily, Watson. Always the pretty much what’s in your Company HR Manual. Go easy on the poor guy. He’s done alright on CNBC in my opinion. Pretty much what you see in your TownHalls.

@1emo is entirely correct. Nothing of any substance is discussed, questions are all pre-populated, skewed diversity is on full display, high-pots get exposure to ask 'probing' questions (just big softballs), with other high-pots in the background filtering out all the difficult or embarrassing questions. I guess if you're interested in our demographic numbers or how our cow manure project is doing, this is the place for you. Admiral Farragut we don't have, more like Colonel Klink or Don Knotts.

A couple years ago I was sat at a long dinner with MW and maybe six other people. It was the most boring thing I ever sat through. I can not remember a single interesting thing he said all night. What you see is what you get.

Mike should have a moderator where he has 1 minute to respond and then go to the next question. Too much rambling and doesn’t really answer the question. If the moderator can reply back and say you are not fully answering the question would be great too

I stopped watching these townhalls live for the following reasons: (1) Softball questions, (2) Employees using the Q&A as an opportunity to make themselves well known to management - some spend more time telling Mike who they are and using very long preambles to demonstrate their “knowledge base” and sucking up in front of a broad audience, (3) Employees with activist agendas like network officers asking why they don’t see diverse groups in positions of power, (4) People asking the CEO questions that are very tactical and pertains to their own specific personal issues, (5) The insistence in using live video questions or chat question which identify the person leading to cr---y inquiries. Mike should allow PollEV questions in order to get a feel as to what the workforce is REALLY feeling. No matter how much they promote their willingness to accept real feedback, consequence history is something that will prevent people from saying what they truly think. These engagements are artificial and too sanitized in my view. PS: That damn suck up Dom attended two town-halls in order to ask questions in both sessions!

Mike says, “Umm” and “Uhh” a lot for someone is the figurehead of a Fortune 500 company. You would think that somebody who is on camera for a living would work in that. It’s grating to listen to him hem and haw in between the usual canned responses. I would prefer a 3-hour townhall where people get to ask real questions back and forth. The one hour block and scripted answers doesn’t build trust. MW gets lobbed these softballs or gets to shut down all critical discussion with the typical, “Benchmarked… market analysis… annual adjustment…” Let’s have some back and forth to really get to the bottom of it. Let’s have a long form discussion with some actual nuance. As it stands, if you’ve seen one town hall then you’ve seen them all: annoying on-hold music, employee network host, technical difficulties, progress toward CIP metrics is a mixed bag, greenwash, no plans for layoffs, do better to keep it that way, Sean asks a question, others ask questions, same-old talking points, done.

There was no new information other than shaming the workforce for not being safe enough. More fatalities in 6 months than in the last 4 years. I wonder what the root cause is. Execs think it’s because leaders haven’t bird dogged in the field enough. Maybe it’s really the distraction and stress of this recession?
