Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Honestly, what is wrong with these people?

I have just about had it with management. I have already let everyone know I am retiring in May of next year when I am finally RE, but I honestly do not know if I can last that long.

I managed to survive the ranking this year, so I am confident nothing major will happen to derail my plans, but the million minor things that are adding up might do it.

In the last few years, I have taken on more & more work as people quit or retire. Each time, management asks if I think I can take on the new duties and still get all my other work done. I tell them I’ll try, but I never really know all a new job entails until I actually do the job. They always say, “Let us know if it becomes too much. We’ll figure something else out.”

Well, after doing a new duty for a 2 months, I realized it is far more involved than originally thought. Maybe someone better than me can do the job without working an excessive amount of hours, but I can’t. I have tried, but I can’t make it work.

Instead of just bailing on the most recent new duties, I asked my manager for some help with parts of the job. Instead of being supportive in any way, my manager offered no solutions and reminded me that I agreed to the extra work.

I was so pi---d, I left for the day. Right now, I don’t care if anything gets done. All I know is I need to recharge if I am to last until May. At this rate, the odds are, I won’t last until years end.

Get ranked NSI next year and get paid till November. Leave in July.

Do what you can within a 40 hour week.

Take some Mondays off.

Speaking from experience here. Just got done.

Take a deep breath, realize the holidays are almost here and the new year will bring freedom. Don’t give up the retirement benefits over this. Do your best work in each 8 hour day, document if needed, and hang tight. The last year was tough for me as well with a similar scenario. I think it is planned this way. You will make it!

OP if you already have made the decision to retire before the next PDS cycle and announced it, then take this nice opportunity to take it easy, hit the high points if your days and slide on out. You can give notice of intent to retire within 4 months of your date, so that's January for you. Take it easy man and don't let your manager push you. Push back.

I’m sorry that is happening to you! I feel your pain, I was asked to take on the duties of another employee who resigned. When I asked my supervisor to help prioritize all my workload and shift some deadlines on lower value items to make room, he said it was all important and it was up to me to risk my career by saying no.

Side note- If you are RE next year, you are NRE now and can’t be let go. You can be assessed NSI and put on a DPC which is like an improvement plan. But passing/failing the DPC has no consequences.

Understand all you say, but the downfall of your argument is in the Title.
People? Really.
You think of ExxonMobil as consisting of People? At the top?

That is some weird science fiction view of things.

Honestly, what’s wrong with those of you who clearly should move on but won’t do so?

The job market is beyond hot. You could apply for Almost any job and at least get an interview. Pick one and go do it.
