Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

United Way campaign: An engine of corporate indoctrination and ideological propaganda.

The United Way campaign will be, once again, spamming your inboxes.

Supervisors and managers will soon begin their preach on the virtuosity of giving and on how the corporation will facilitate that process through their contests and prices to the best bidder.

Amongst all the manifestations of EM toxic culture, I find the United Way campaign one of its most disgusting and insulting, the pinnacle of corpo

If you have a heart for charity, I celebrate you, but please don't delegate it to a heartless corporation that only cares about creating a fake collective sense of purpose and meaning.

If you think you are more virtuous because you donated more $ or time than others, or if you need a corporation to nudge into becoming more virtuous, then you'd better reexamine your definition of virtuosity and your motivations, or it might be that you are a perfect fit for upper management.

During my 14 years in Exxon I purposely donated ZERO and I feel very virtuous.

@Real ClintonNJ - thank you for adding absolutely nothing of value to the discussion. I’m sure that you add nothing of value to EM as well, which is why you’re still in Annandale. .

It reminded me when I joined the company as a new employee, this young Indian guy at URC advised me that if I donated $10,000 a year, I will be a leadership donor and will get to meet and have lunch etc. with VPs. This visibility will be good for my career. He said don't worry about the donation and the. cause and use it as a way to get promoted and be on leadership track fast. This person is still working at EM as a manager and as a persistent brown loser.

So much for the true charity and helping others. I never donated to UW through company after this advice and did all my charity outside without a need to be rewarded back.

I rarely donated to UW and only did it some years in EMIT so I could wear jeans on Fridays. I never liked the pressure of being made to feel like I HAVE to contribute. Let me decide what causes I feel passionate about and want to donate to.
Now what really gets me rolling my eyes these days is receiving propaganda for UW in the mail since I’m retired. I expect this will continue until I pass on to my next life and maybe then they will still find me!!

Most of the time when a big company donates for a cause, UW in this case, is because they can claim tax deductions and make the propaganda that they are a good company, and it is not because they are good “people”. See Permian.

I believe strongly in giving but not to United Way. Too much money goes to their internal costs and does not make it to those in need. I give to organizations where 100of my money goes to the cause. Volunteers run the organizations aren’t worried about executive positions.

Also United Way gives money to some groups that I oppose and don’t support.

And I don’t need a toxic and heartless company pressuring me to give money through them so they can take credit and the organizers can get brownie points on their reviews.

I believe strongly in the importance of giving back to the community and donating to worthy charitable causes.

I can’t imagine why I would do it through XOM and let them take credit so they can tell everyone what a generous company they are.

I have been induced at other companies to contribute to UW but those companies matched my donation and paid the administrative fees. All XOM does is take credit.

I feel that UW dilutes my contribution with their administrative fees.

@CallingBS - where did I say I was a UW employee. Everything I wrote is true. Don’t tell me - everyone who disagrees with you must be a liar and/or an id--t? Got it! Thanks ;-)

One of the most disappointing things about working at ExxonMobil is how greedy people are. Volunteer with Hnited Way and see where the money goes. Not just on the day of caring. Actually on your own time. They do a lot of good. Bunch of greedy people if you think you can’t donate due to inflation. Look at how much money you make Compressco to most people. If your charitable giving doesn’t hurt you aren’t giving enough. If it doesn’t inconvenience you or make you wonder if you can afford that vacation you aren’t giving enough. If you don’t pack your lunch and skip the Starbucks you do t give enough. Greed is a terrible thing.

UW of Gloucester County, NJ, used to post their financial audits on their website. Then, a few years ago, they stopped. Why do you think that was?

For 2 years, I printed out the audit report and posted it on my office door. Both times, about a week after posting, my manager asked me to take down the reports. Why do you think that was?

The audits showed that over 90% of donations were spent INTERNALLY, on UW wages, travel expenses, office equipment, building space rental, promotional material, prizes and contributions to health insurance and pension plans.

So out of every dollar given to them, less than 10 cents went to charitable causes. If you think that is better value for money than giving directly to the charity of your choice, you must be a brainwashed manager.

United Way is in fact an honorable institution that supports many people with very diverse needs at the local community level.

If any of those words above make you think 'ExxonMobil', then by all means do good charity work for ExxonMobil.

Ask your Managers: "Is the company matching - dollar for dollar - every dollar I give through your middle-man plan. Including 'In-Kind' dollars for that homeless shelter we built behind the A2 Stack??"

If your manager says 'I don't know.' to the above question - that's what he was trained to do. Good job, boyo.

In any case:
Please do give to United Way or similar organizations - or donate your in-kind time.

Explanation for those not in the US:

United Way of greater Houston is a non-profit that allegedly allocates donations (of $ and time) into the most "valuable" charity projects.

Every year all the brown-nosers, supervisors and executives put together a $h1tt show with contests, prices, a dedicated website to collect donations, and prices (including a car) and will signal in yammer, their supervisors, and their sponsors how much they love this corporate initiative and how proud they are to be working for such a noble cause.

High-fliers will eagerly volunteer to take part of this, will donate a 4 figure number (you get a special ribbon for this) to signal everyone (primarily your sponsor) how big of a brown-noser they are, and they even host special meetings to preach about "the gift of giving" and on how proud they feel to be part of such a noble corporation that cares so much about the community.

You can even win a premium dedicated parking space in the parking garage (close to the elevators so your fat a$$ doesn't have to be transported more than a few feet) with a sign "united way champion" so everyone knows that you are the biggest brown-noser on Campus.

Employees are mandated to log into a dedicated website and "pledge" (you can pledge zero if you want). They monitor if you have logged in but not how much you pledged (allegedly). Supervisors will pester you to log in and pledge because they will be reprimanded if their group doesn't get to 100% participation.

But the most insulting of all this is, as OP states, that those who engage and participate eagerly in this farce tend to believe they are somewhat endowed with some higher virtuousity, morality and superior values than those who don't, who are dismissed as unvirtuous cultural misfits.

The corporation also spends quite a lot of $$$ in this nonsense, and you can sign up to some project (sponsored by United Way) and would let you take the day off.

But don't be fooled, rest assured that the "virtuous" brown-nosers tend to sign up to projects that involve inanimate things but not rael people.

Between going to the children's hospital and making a terminally ill child smile by reading a book or something alike, or going to some empty anonymous house to paint a fence and beautify a garden, the "virtuous" ExxonMobil brown-nosers will choose always the second option.

Being principled is definitely synonymous with whining yearly about a charity that you’re not obligated to donate to. Hizzah!

I learned many years before I retire. No matter what they say about United Way, I have the right to NOT donate

But retired folks still get emails about it. Can't delete them fast enough.

I'd rather give money to help animals.

Due to recent inflationary pressure that has not been counteracted by salary and my need to save extra for retirement due to the cost saving measures, it would not be fiscally responsible to take additional funds away from my family this year.

I know what you are saying. The yearly campaign feels very much like another check box of things we have to do to bolster the company’s image. The way it is promoted just doesn’t have heart behind it.

At any rate, UW fund some very good causes. I donate to it every year. If you are particular about where your money goes, you can always select the specific organization. (I assume that option is still available.)

Or just contribute directly to the charity of your choice.
