Full disclosure I work for the lower case car company but I live near Dearborn. I'm confused. Why all the new labs in the last few years (that one under construction on Oakwood is gigantic compared to anything where I'm at) and at the same time talk of cutting jobs in engineering? On the surface it doesn't make sense.

Labs to support recalls and reinvent the wheel i suppose
When the plans were put together to expand ICE test several years ago, I don't think anyone was aware of how fast we would transition to BEV's nor the effects that Covid would have on the workplace.
Most of the Ford ICE test labs no longer have the expertise to support EV's and will be winding down. Take the Dyno Lab where they have 5 wings of ICE dynos. That capacity and level of testing is not required for electric motors. Any NVH or component test labs lab will also be greatly reduced or eliminated altogether. The Allen Park test facility will be eventually shut down. EV' don't need rigorous emissions testing.
In 10 years most testing will be done in CAE. EV's are much easier to model with good results, than ICE vehicles. There will be a lot of empty building on the R&E campus.
Who owns Ford Land? I think the family owns most of the property and rents it back to FMC.
The goal is to have everyone at the Dearborn Campus Center when work is completed (ETA 2024). I believe that is when they will require RTO. I will be retired by then.
The left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing. There is very little alignment on strategy from the top (because there isn’t much of a strategy).
Nothing Ford management does makes sense, because none of them have any good sense.
The new labs are for EV and self driving cars. ICE vehicles are a thing of the past at Ford and will slowly wind down.
