Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

I don't get those who say they love their job at XOM

You can say it's a good paying job, but you can't say it's a good job. XOM has a highly toxic culture that's felt at all levels. From glorifying working an ungodly amount of hours each week to pitting people against each other if they want to progress to punishing good employees with PIPs... and on and on. How can you love that? Honestly? Is it q case of Stockholm syndrome?

Nobody enjoys working for somebody else. Anyone who claims to is either a fool or a liar.

I don't buy into the 'Stockholm' syndrome as a clinical diagnosis, me.
But it you're talking 'Angola, LA' or 'Parchman, MS' syndrome - that sounds reasonable and good to study.
Call me Polunsky, but it could be pretty much anywhere in Tx.
That syndrome.

I actually love the “toxic”environment… also love the work life balance as most folks. Unfortunately I am not one of the sponsored hipos and the growth opportunity has been more than pathetic. Waiting for background check of the new job now!

@OP They don’t get themselves either.

They keep repeating that they love their jobs to rationalize staying in a job they despise because they need the money. More often than not, they can’t do any better.

I see at least three resumes from current EM employees every week. Most have 10+ years of experience. It’s kinda pathetic.

Time to retire fellas. You’re way past your professional prime, and you’re just not that good at what you do anymore. Nobody wants to work with or hire a cantankerous old a-ho-e.

I actually like my job at EM. However, the “system” and pervasive toxic culture really eat into the overall experience, so I’m planning to leave anyway.

I don’t know anyone I work with who loves their job except a manager in my group. She loves her job and seems to enjoy lying, gaslighting, and verbally abusing employees. I know of 4 people who have asked to leave the group because of her. I plan to steer clear of her whenever possible until I quit in December.

It’s just a matter of ripping off the bandaid at this point. Since XOM insists on being average in pay and benefits, you can get paid the same if not better moving to another role. Putting up with the culture is not worth it.

As another wise Layoffer has poetically expressed before:

"they have brown nosed so long and breathed in enough brown stuff fumes to have $h1tt for brains now."

Those who speak up here are not "disgruntled complainers".

They are the unheard and unseen.

If EM would empower employees to voice their ideas and thoughts without fear of retaliation or being labeled as troublemakers then there wouldn't be any posts here.

People here say what they can't say in the workplace. they speak their minds without fear.

Don't confuse dissent with complain and anger.

for me, I get off on doing business with my customers. I don't expect my company to care about me. Would I prefer a different company? Probably... but after 30 years of service, I mostly tune it out and carry on with business. Management's opinion of me doesn't matter that much, I know they don't know what I do so their opinion is not my business. In a few more years, when I'm ready to go, one of my customers will offer me an excellent job because they see I am not a disgruntled complainer. This is not an endorsement of the company's policies or misplaced incentives.
