Anyone Else Feel Like You Won The Lottery

First, my heart goes out to those who were SIRPed and are devastated, hear-broken, struggling to cope, blindsided, etc. You will get through this and I wish you the best of luck.

However, I feel like I won the lottery. I am a long time pensioner, so I needed to leave this year. Getting SIRPed was a huge bonus because of:

  • Severance pay
  • Severance for medical, dental, life insurance, and AD&D. And life insurance has additional 12 months after severance.
  • paid for unused vacation (I took no days off-saw this coming)
  • free career management

I also have a line on a great job that is ideal for my skill set. Things couldn’t be going better (except if my last day was November 30). My manager was uncomfortable and sweaty during our brief separation session but I had to contain my excitement! That’s OK. She earned her pay for the day.

Oh, and to shut the trolls up about an old one riding it out just to collect a paycheck, for the last few years I was a TA or on the bubble for one and have been working in new tech for over a decade.

The mamma bird sometimes kicks the baby bird out of the nest because the baby bird is stymied and stuck and didn't know what's best for it. That's the way I'm looking at being SIRP'd. I got kicked out of the nest and now I'm going to stream spread my wings and fly. I too have several things in the works and will likely see an offer in the next few days. Making more. And the best part? A huge bonus from Ford of several months of severance! Thanks!

When the AICP bonus is cancelled next year because of the economy (you know is coming just like 13 years ago), I'll be laughing all the way to the bank! SIRP now is hitting the lottery. Good luck to the rest of you when more cuts happen when all companies will be in hiring freezes!

Good for you! You won the work/retirement game. I started in ‘06 so got screwed out of the pension then got SIRPed out of the blue in August. Very close to having enough saved but with the market tanking and worse coming I have to go back to work. Hoping to get an offer either today or tomorrow on a new job exactly 1 month after being fired. To my SIRP friends happy anniversary and wish me luck.

I was terminated. I did not see it coming. I did not see the termination as winning the lottery. I was shocked.

@OP. I am glad for you. Not many people were that lucky to be SIRPed before retirement, not many people were lucky to have a full pension when SIRPed, and definitively, not many people honed their skills @Ford like you did. It seems luck + hard work paid off for you. Congrats!

As I always say, you make your own luck. The world is full with opportunities, but if you are not prepared for when they show, they will slip between your fingers.
