If you get unlimited PTOs my advice is just use 28 (25 + 3 ) as you did this year with combined PTOs and Floating Holidays.

Unlimited PTO is a window dressing feature so your firm compares well w other tech firms. First let’s admit it does have one saving Grace. Employees don’t hoard a bunch of days towards the last quarter to save for kid’s/parents/whatever possible medical emergency etc

In reality, on the macro level employees end up using less days compared to the traditional scheme. Also, the firm wins by not paying out unused vacay days.

TR already had a generous vacation/PTO scheme. Most in ‘23 will use around the same amount of days. If you put this to a referendum I would say 60-70% would stay w the old scheme. Some dummy on the Atrium said now he can take vacation with his wife. You dummy, you can take your family to DisneyWorld with the current scheme. What are you talking about? Other too, like seals were overjoyed. You already get 23-28 days (pto+personal), you need more? You gonna use more?

I like the traditional scheme. It was equality. You get X amount of days. Be an adult and figure out your life/work. My parents were immigrants who did honest work, working ridiculous hours w barely any PTO days without the luxury of wfh. This modern world where HR tells us how excited she is to announce this new benefit really irks me.

@7css+1iYOmYMD - exactly. All this means is less PTO time, and no accrued PTO to pay out when they eliminate your role. It will be harder on employees who are in states that require PTO to be carried forward rather than lost at the end of the year.

This is bs. My manager is already a micromanager. Like the time will be approved. We won’t get more time we will get less time and be dinged and denied raises for excessive time off. It’s like making us salaried so they didn’t have to pay us overtime. No thanks!

Y’all realize that it’s not unlimited “paid time off” right lmao. You get what you get til your paid time off runs out then you can basically go on sabbatical which is a joke. It’s not paid folks it’s basically keeping you “employed” while you go jack around doing whatever you want and if you want to come back to a job at Thomson it’s there for you. Biggest sham ever

As others have pointed out, unlimited PTO is a tax dodge for the company. Very few people push the envelope on it, and then the company doesn't have to pay it out when you go.

If they're doing this, it's not because they care about a few weeks of payout if they riff someone. It's because they think it will be an attractive "perk" in lieu of paying better. Some people will undoubtedly be suckered by it and they'll target anyone that "abuses" the policy.

The reason companies like unlimited PTO is so they don’t have to pay it out when you are let go.

Studies have shown that employees at companies with unlimited PTO on average use less PTO than those with a set amount.

It all comes down to your manager and the department you are in. The manager approves it.

I will be more than certainly pushing this as hard as I can if this is true.

4 day work weeks here I come.
