Tip for beginners at ExxonMobil

I had the pleasure to work in various organizations at ExxonMobil as part of my job rotations. It all boils down to one major skill - storytelling: are you telling the story which management want to hear?

My most interesting recent experience was at the marketing organization. It was amazing to learn how market conditions such as demand and margin were translated to innovative marketing strategies! I do recall one member who got promoted to a senior level for improving the site experience – seriously?! I personally don’t feel any difference going to ExxonMobil site vs Shell site – maybe blue is prettier that yellow?? but then I heard that the newly promoted member was somehow related to the top executive of the company!

I have a tip for the beginners; actually, it's a very long one and only shared with the young purdy ones that are wanting to move up (and down) really fast within the Organ(ization).... if you know what I mean!

I have definitely seen nepotism at work. Also good old boy networks based on which Texas university you went to. Some even have their own employee group based only on the fact they went to a certain university with the group sponsored by an executive and having its own budget for boondoggle activities!

My advice as someone who has worked in a variety if industries including Exxon at some point of time (and have done extremely well in my career) will be to find an exit as fast as you can. This place is mostly suitable for filth to prosper.

“Tip for beginners at ExxonMobil”

I have a better “tip” for beginners at Exxon and everywhere else:

Never take advice from anyone over 50 who still has to show up somewhere everyday for the sake of earning a paycheck.

Story that the management wants to hear? Total brainwashing of the stupidest.

Well, for salary increase, annual bonus, and getting more RSU's, I had to sign up and join this club :)

Indeed. For the site experience, a survey was conducted, and the response rate was very small. Most of the negative feedback was flagged as incomplete response and key words such as “clean site”, “fast technology”, “large c-store” were highlighted in management presentations.
