I’m a CL 24 and took over the assignment of a higher CL person that just retired. There are higher CL people in my group working an easier portfolio than me making way more money only because they are older. These small incremental raises are not going to keep young high performers. My group is old people who can’t make more money somewhere else or new hires that aren’t good enough to go somewhere else. All over the company I noticed a lack of mid-career people.

Company will squeeze everything out of the talented one with no reward unless you know how to play the game or is sponsored. In one of my previous role, I did both my job plus my bosses’ job plus some more. Worked 10 to 12 hours per day for 2 years. So he got the promotion because of all that I accomplished. I was shipped off to a new assignment with no pay increase and an NI for not networking enough.

My advise is to draw your boundaries. Don’t worry about the pay or what every one else is doing or their CL. It will drive you crazy because you can’t control these things.

Small pay increases are the norm in corporate America, you have to make sure the CEO and Executive team can make as much money as possible.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been given more “opportunities” by taking over someone else’s work (in addition to my current work) with nothing extra in return. I get no promotion, increase in pay, or consideration when ranked. In 2020, when they pushed so many people out, I was doing the work of 2, maybe 2 1/2 people. It was exhausting and no one seemed to care when ranking was done. There were people in my group who refused to take on extra tasks, and were ranked higher than I was. Turns out, they were the smart ones.

What I've noticed since rolling out the new ranking process in 2020. It is designed to eliminate the vets period. Your performance has nothing to do with anything.

Same happened to me when I was CL25 and I accomplished 75% of the work in my department and was paid very little.

It happens. Those old CL guys in your group likely did same.

Welcome to the club. I’m a CL25 in manufacturing who took the place of a CL27, and the position was occupied by a CL28 before that.

  1. When you’re young you’ll feel underpaid, when you’re older you’ll feel overpaid.
  1. Learn to appreciate your absolute pay and not be constantly miserable over relative pay
  1. Leave for a new company until #1 and #2 are true

That is what it feels like being talented at a big company. You're potential is high - that is great. You have a few options:

  1. Put in very long hours and learn to deal with people smoothly so they love you. Climb the ladder and pass the old folks you refer to.
  1. Start your own company and pay yourself for your own high output. Also requires very long hours.
  1. Re-specialize to a field that depends more on raw talent than experience & knowledge. Engineering is not that field. You could try software engineering for example.
