Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Meetings this week to discuss return to office

Management wants us all back in the office. They tore our buildings apart and threw out all our office supplies. All the employees came in and took their chairs and monitors. It will be next year before it all gets sorted out.

In all this discussion seldom does the mention of transfer of knowledge get discussed.

Remote work does provide the flexibility to expand the talent pool. You don't have to convince people to relocate. However, it can result in less committed employees as well as employers.

It disheartens me to hear so many people bashing WFH. It was this very flexibility that opened up to talent nation-wide that could not work for the company previously, including me.

In Germany they are (Ford employees) already back to office full time.

When our execs (Karna, Susie, etc.) start coming into the office, so will I. Until that time - pound sand. “Do as I say, not as I do” went out the window many moons ago.

Return to work after the layoffs/cuts. The parking will be better.

We can't have everyone return to the office, as we started hiring people that are not located near corporate offices.

OP is just trolling. The reality is they are not going to make everyone return to the office, especially those who are software developers or can easily do their jobs from home. Might they try to have everyone onsite a day or two a month? Sure, maybe but that won't last long.

@gmm+1ihVky8t - my issue was less with the RTO/WFH dilemma than with the "make snowflakes cry" message. (Aside: it's funny how there's only one group of people, whose political affiliation shall remain nameless, for whom making their opposites cry is an aspiration.) As for WFH workers being replaceable - I go back again to the job-critical nature of the work location. Those of us who are capable of performing our work as well from home as from the office (MS&S, for example) are actually not THAT easy to replace with outsourced workers. Put it plainly - there's not a brand manager in Mexico that Ford will hire to replace Jason Sprawka (who left of his own volition, but you get the idea). It absolutely wouldn't surprise me if Ford continued to treat us like the outdated mammoth that it is and FORCE us back in the office, but that is a HORRIBLE idea, especially given how the workspaces are now set up, but that should not be the norm. And given the overwhelming support for WFH in certain organizations, I simply don't see a logical way for Ford to replace all those people with RTOers, who tend to be older and more conservative. Not what Ford is aiming for at all.

Whether or not you work from home or in the office, are considered a marginal employee or a superstar, it makes no difference to the corporation’s aims. Think larger this is outside of your control. Salaried workforce replacement.

I love WFH as much as the next person. But I welcome RTO. The biggest reason is because if we are working from home in the US. I can be easily replaced by someone working from home in India or Mexico. When you are no longer place dependent, many times your job isn't place dependent. This is the real discovery that I think management has made. I have already seen many responsibilities go to Mexico just in the 3 years I have been with the company.

@qmu+1ihVky8t Sociopath much?

Time and again it's been proven that the old-school way of being in a building 9-5 is NOT the most efficient way of getting work done (assuming, of course, your work isn't location-dependent, but if it was, you weren't WFH in the first place). Going back to the office when you don't have a work space to hear yourself think because you are elbow-to-elbow with five more people on conference calls is a GUARANTEED way to reduced productivity. But if all you care about is sticking it to the "snowflakes", then, by all means, keep hoping. We do a "phenomenal" enough job of retaining talent as it is, so let's encourage even more people who value flexibility (aka., younger people) walk away from the company. (BTW, the people most commonly guilty of calling others "snowflakes" are some of the most irony-impaired ones out there, since THEY are typically the one to start bi-----g at the slightest change to the status quo, even if it benefits them.)

They tracked everything going out in our building. Mice, keyboard, the whole thing. So yes they have a record of it and want it all back.

I would welcome RTO. WFH has its advantages and disadvantages. Plus it will be fun to watch all the snowflakes quit because they have to go into the office!

Was there an announcement here at Ford re: RTO? I haven't heard or seen anything, either from my Manager or via the internal Ford sites.

When I retired last year, we were all required to return all of our equipment, including our chairs.

Ford Land did not request that people who retired last year return their chairs. As for monitors, most of the ones our department took home are so old I think they would probably be scrapped anyway.

Ford NEVER values knowledge. One of its biggest failures IMO.

OP, what department are you in?

The announcement of back to office is just a reaction to almighty Tesla's announcement and also to see how many people quit or opt to retire rather than go back. Nobody wants it except maybe LL6s

Don't know how they can get all the equip!ent back. They weren't tracking who took what in my area. Suspect they wrote it all off.
