Thread regarding Ford layoffs

If you're young- consider getting a Trade certification

If let go, currently engineer/IT/technical, consider becoming a skilled tradesman!! Skilled tradesmen are in severe shortage; a certified skill that can travel wherever you wish to live. They pay while you learn!

Nothing better than having an engineering degree/IT degree... now a skilled tradesman.
You can eventually start your own business!

I'm a retired engineer from a Big Three automotive company. I preach to anyone I know today-- become a certified electrician, welder, HVAC. You are paid as you learn/acquire certification. Then, you have a skill that goes anywhere!!

Not a bad suggestion. I'm an Engineer, and have several friends who are Electricians, Plumbers, Lineman. All of them make about what I make, and have pensions, paid benefits etc. Not a great suggestion for older people, but younger people, absolutely.

If you are an engineer with experience and a degree, switching to skilled trades is a terrible idea

Yea great advice. I’m 59 how the heck am I supposed to go into the trades now that I’m unemployed? This would have been helpful 30 years ago - today not so much.

Honest question, what skilled trade can someone do that won't completely wear out their body by their mid to late 40s?

You are basically saying…become a janitor or a plumber instead of an engineer….hopefully u don’t have any young kids that rely on you for advice.

Heck, become a garbage man. You will be more healthy, less stressed, and not have to put up with the toxic 40 year virus at Ford.
