Branch Managers

Is it true that Branch Managers can’t help customers? I was swamped today and my manager took a long lunch, played on his phone and rearranged the lobby. WTF, I want a promotion now!!

Not true at all. Branch managers are supposed to help when the branch is in the weeds. The branch I just left hired a manager with no banker experience they couldn't open a sole owner personal account if their life depended on it and that branch will go down the drain fast.

I went to a branch to close my account before I quit. Teller was very helpful - congratulated me on getting out - but only the manager could actually “close” the account.

Teller gave me all the money out of it and instructed me on how to close it online after 24 hours. This was at 2:30 in the afternoon when the branch was closing at 5:00. Weird time for a lunch but it was clear it was just two pretty young looking people in sight of customers.

I think you need to take a look at the changes in the company. Short staffed, less people. Most branches don’t have service managers anymore. I am. A branch manager. I love helping customers and I get told I help too many customers. Situations calls for BM to step in. But it shouldn’t be often.

When I was a banker and started to feel overloaded with customers, I used to purposely take as long as possible with each customer, and didn't give two craps how many customers built up in the lobby to get my branch manager off his a-s to help. It became a sick game to me.

I actually slow down when my boss overloads me. Nothing drastic, just a little tweak of the knob, double check then triple check things.

A managers job is to pitch in when needed to help the staff. At least it was for years until the entitled MBA spoiled millennial culture arrived. It used to be if his manager saw the behavior you described, they would be leaving with a box. But the C-suite just counts their cash and doesn’t care if it burns down around them as they walk out the door.

Branch managers are responsible for driving business into the branch. They are basically an RM (at least this is what it used to be like). What is your manager doing to attract new customers and engage existing customers?
