General inkling is Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) result in a termination... but why even bother with these plans? Can you get severance at the end of a PIP when you're terminated? Any experience with this?

I think more often than not, PIPs are not meant to help you "succeed" or meant to be something you can "pass." I was put on one back in 2017 when I was working in the Pro Support group and they basically made it impossible. My opinion is that PIPs are used to make people quit so Dell doesn't have to pay out for unemployment... PIP's also go on your record. I quit before I could fail mine because I knew I wanted to come back someday - which ironically, I did. But now in the cyber security department.
I was put on a coaching plan that would lead to a pip if I failed. The thing was I was put on the plan for failing the Dell university or whatever it was called (Even though HR said it couldn't happen) and for only hitting 63% of my quota, when I actually grew the business by 15%. Half way through the coaching plan my manager said he was putting me on a pip. Boy was he shocked when I said no he wasn't and provided the HR documents that stated that you have to fail a coaching plan before you can be put on a pip, given it want quarter end putting me on a pip wasn't allowed, I hit quota and passed. No pip.
I know about several colleagues that got a PIP, sometimes entirely out of the blue, without apparent reason, while the definition of a PIP is that it is a last resort for underperforming people. There should have been a series of "red signs" before someone gets a PIP theoretically. And it should all start with the definition of "performance", lacking mostly. Some sources say that management has an MBO/KPI that incites them to distribute PIP's ... sounds perverse. Often, including HR, it is sold as "an exercise wherein you will be helped to improve", your manager will help to make it a success ... and other nonsense. Also saw a particular colleague who was fired at the end of his PIP, did not get 100 % of sales target, only 95 %. I consider this whole PIP as just being an instrument, if you want to beat someone, then use the PIP-process. As another reaction already mentioned, you may have annoyed someone above you, willingly or accidentally, which makes the PIP useful to blacken someone. Objectives are defined into it, often aspects where you do not have control about, so there starts the easy exercise for the supervisor. You're out of control and hence are entirely surrendered to the will of the one judging about the fulfillment ... This company talks a lot about "ethics", "honesty" and "integrity" and other nice terms ... I'd say : walk the talk instead.
Recently had experience with this, they actually offered me severance as an option instead of the PIP. Best part was I was planning on giving 2 weeks the next day as I had just accepted an external offer. That Job was miserable with 3 significant role and org changes in 6 months and a new manger with toxic belittling manager that severely impacted my mental health and performance. Sometimes things work out in the end.
PIP usually happens when they are trying to edge you out/ make working their unbearable. Be careful what you say and who you say it to as you might have annoyed somebody higher up.
I'm currently on PIP and its only making me a better Dell employee.
I was on a PIP before Covid. Was given a quarter to turn it around. Hit my quarter and the PIP went away. My boss said they wouldn't have let me go but who knows.
The way quotas are in my org you have to have your best year every year to hit your number. Like someone else said if you're on PIP start looking elsewhere. Unless your in a position to chill for a few months.
Is this just a rumor?
PIPs right before or after a big layoffs, should be a sign of a decaying organization.
Point of a PIP is to mentally fu-k with you, before pushing you out. If you can find another gig, go get it yesterday.
The whole Dell organization needs a PIP.

I think Michael is on a pip at the moment due to the stock price being so low....
