Nowadays, whenever I meet new people outside work, I felt ashamed to introduce myself as working in 3M. I am worried what other people perceives 3M company to be - with the countless lawsuit in ear plug and PFAS. Hurting people and the environment.
Does anyone have the same thoughts when introducing to others?
I am waiting for the severance package. Won't be leaving so easily.

I think you worried too much. Mmm is still a great company with great people and technology. Just need a strong leader to take the ship out the mud and move toward the right direction.

Very true. One does not have to understand the science when a chemical is ingested to know it will have a deleterious on the human body. It is also inaccurate to say that 3M is “committed to cleaning things up like they are doing in Minnesota.” 3M senior management are fighting tooth and nail in courts all over the world to avoid financial responsibility for poisoning human beings. Moreover, the dangers of PFAS have been known for decades - suggesting otherwise is a falsehood.
The narrative surrounding the earplugs is true and the American people (jurors) are fully capable of understanding laws regarding product liability and rendering judgement. Cases far more complicated are decided by jurors everyday.
You need to be prepared to share your story about how the work you do helps society.
Whether you make better tape, road reflection materials, adhesives, etc. You can let them know how much 3M products have a positive impact on society.
As for PFAS, just mention that people didn't know the lasting impact. And tell them 3M is committed to cleaning things up like they are doing in Minnesota.
As for earplugs, tell them that the narrative is not true. The earplugs have been safely used by many soldiers, but it also takes wearing them properly to prevent hearing loss. Juries don't understand the science.
The good thing is you can leave the death camp on your own.
My grandparents used to think I worked at a great company. Now they refer to it as the PFAS contaminating/defective earplug company.
