Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Don't we hate bi-weekly one-on-one with our manager?

I know my manager doesn't like me. I hate him, too.

We are two different individuals. He joined Cisco as a newly grad fresher 22 years ago and has only been at Cisco for 22 years with no other experience outside Cisco whereas I have more experiences in tech industry outside Cisco totaling for over 30 years.

We can't just get along. I don't want to speak with him. Each time we speak, we almost fight and fire up whatever we discuss. He just sound so bossy over me throughout about anything I talk. It's just so disgusting. I don't even want to see his face over cam.

I often wonder why I should work under someone who is much younger and less experienced than I.

And I just feel so sick each time I have bi-weekly one-on-one with our manager.

What should I do with bi-weekly one-on-one with our manager?

I had a manager at Cisco like this....only he was my same age. I was reorged into his group, and wasn't part of the "inside club", but I had more experience (technical and people interaction) than every other person in the group, including him. We argued at every weekly meeting we had.....he was stuck in his ways, and didn't like me telling him what needed to be done, but I was more exposed to customer input than he was and he needed to hear what was going on. It really sucked, but I played along as much as I could. But overall, he was a toxic jerk. It was a bad few years in my Cisco career.

And to the person who said "BTW, since you've over 30 yrs experience, why aren't you a mgr."......go fly a kite. Many of us don't want to be a manager. I did my "manager" stints at other companies, and would have at Cisco, but it didn't happen due to the types of jobs I pursued.

"Sounds like you are anti-social with no soft skills. Nobody wants an old grumpy tech dude with a protruding stomach, especially at Cisco."

I'm overtly social with minimal soft skills, but it must be enough as I'm definitely an old grumpy tech dude w/ a protruding stomach. Many of my team are old tech dudes with varying levels of protruding stomachs and grumpiness. For some reason, we all seem to get along, mainly because we don't let our ego get in the way and everyone has hard skills that make them the go to guy for part of what our team does. They also make sure that someone can handle anything but the hardest issues when they're on PTO so we're not struggling when things break.

"I’d also have trouble working with someone who ends a sentence with “I”.

Are you sure your manager is the problem?"

I guess this guy doesn't know English grammar. Learn good English, dude.

You sound like at least half the problem here.

“ I realize there are good many people who love Cisco and protect it here in this thread. Then why they came here I wonder. They are patrolling this thread, representing the company?”

+1

The irony is that they disregard the “thelayoff” url (meaning) and posted here. You should ignore them. Not worth your time. They are paid trolls.

The paid trolls could be the same as those unshamefully brown noses. They are the droppings on the streets that we passed, as we quietly cursed on the bad owners of those dogs.

I enjoy the wise advises, and supports on here and ignore the paid trolls.

We have all had mgrs we haven't liked personally or professionally. It's called "playing the game". I liken it to acting. Take the upper hand and be professional (or just quit and stop whining).

If your mgr has been at Cisco for 22 yrs, he is not young, he is at least 46 yrs old. Deal with it or quit. BTW, since you've over 30 yrs experience, why aren't you a mgr. Sounds like you are anti-social with no soft skills. Nobody wants an old grumpy tech dude with a protruding stomach, especially at Cisco.

Since you have more industry experience, you should start looking externally while your external experience is still relevant.

Document your meetings in case you need to talk to HR or unemployment office.

Upper management will back up your manager most likely.

Lean on your friends for emotional supports.
