Refusing to train your replacement

My colleague had a full on anxiety attack when he was told to train a new employee. He did it and is no longer in this company. I am thinking about what are the biggest reasons why experienced employees do not like to train new people. Is the reason precisely that the employees fear they are training their replacement? I would try to ignore that request because I am not paid enough to train someone, but also because I would not know how to allocate time for it.

I was willing to train as long as the individual is qualified for the work, willing to learn, and be respectful. I do want to see my hard work in good hands so I can move on. I have no desire to be stuck in the same role forever.

However, my backfill was neither willing to learn or respectful. Full of ego, lacked listening skills, impatient, and down-right rude. Attitude that the job was a short stop-over. Zero qualifications. So I did my handover, document it, and then told my new boss that I don't have time to continue to do two jobs with no end in sight. That was it.

If management continues to fill open positions with favorites to benefit themselves rather than fill them with qualified individuals to benefit the company, then let them deal with the consequences.

People should be the number one responsibility of management...this include proper staffing/ succession planning, regular communication, and training. Sadly, management completely failed in this regard.

I’m not worry about training my replacement because no amount of training is going to overcome incompetence or an ill fit. You can’t replace years of experience with with a few days or weeks of training. If Management is stupid, then so be it. Let them wreck it.
