Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Let me get this straight

at&t layed off or forced out (losing HC) older employees and created a 2nd tier payment group of technicians and are now scrambling to hire lower compensated employees?
So older techs who were previously paid around $40 hr are now paid around $20?
WHAT A BUNCH OF SLEEZE BA--S.
Starting salary in my town for garbage truck drivers is $28 right off the street and $34 for experienced drivers with pay steps up.
Who in their right mind would hire on?
Does Stankey & Santone think for a minute they will be getting qualified, gifted, employees?
Just amazing.

I hired on in the 90’s. Healthcare, vision and dental included. We also received an annual team award that averaged $3,000. That WAS Pacific Bell. Now all that is gone. We do get a good pay rate now but everything is expensive now (gasoline $6.80 a gallon). Meanwhile anyone that put their 401K money in T stock has seen it drop like a dead balloon. And the last 2 CEOs have mismanaged the heck out of this corporation and still get compensated way beyond belief. And are on the Wall of Shame. So many that are in love with ATT need to get a clue. At least the company can buyout the few that want out. AND replace the leaders that have mismanaged for so long.

What happens where I live is people get hired, we train them and then they leave and go to work for Comcast for more. So we're basically training Comcast's workforce.

Federal Minimum wage is $7.25 geniuses. Only SOME states moved it to $15.00. This stuff below:
Lol you people really think the job is that easy. So telling me working in all weather seasons, moving a 28ft ladder around, hanging and running wires, dealing with customers and there sometimes nasty houses, dealing with network issues on a daily basis, figuring out network issues and who to call to solve network issues. I'm sorry but technicians are revenue makers that deal with alot of bs. So why low ball the position.

“Moving 28ft ladder around”,”hanging and running wires”, “dealing with customers”, “nasty houses”, “figuring out network issues”, “who to call to solve network issues”.

Excuse me, but what exactly did you think you would be doing as a technician at AT&T??? Also, premises and wire technicians don’t “figure” out network problems or “call to solve network issues”. That is beyond your wage scale or responsibility.

The job is worth what it takes to get an employee to do the job well. It’s like the guy that went for a welding job test. The interviewer said they have starting pay at $18 an hour and top pay at $30 an hour. We need to see a weld from you before we decide to hire you. The prospect brought back 2 welds, one real cr---y and one that was outstanding. The interviewer ask why 2 welds? The prospect said the first one is an $18 per hour weld and the second is a $30 per hour weld, which one are you hiring?

It’s not really a two tiered system. They pay Prem/Wire techs about half as much as core technicians and over the years they have taken work away from core techs and given it to Prem/Wire Techs. This was a SBC thing and they brought it over to BellSouth after the merger along with the concept of hiring temp/term core techs. Although Prem/Wire techs are technically CWA, they are in a different contract than the core techs and get screwed over pretty hard by T.

Btw, that 23-25 dollar an hour pay is top pay. The starting pay for these jobs are about half of that.

Technician pay has been inflated for many years and this is a market reset. This new pay would be an accurate assessment based on the skills required to do the job. Sorry, no technician deserves over $40 per hour plus overtime.

So you gonna blame someone else when AT&T tech took $20 pay instead of higher paying garbage collector job or truck driver job?

A auto service order writer ME in Plano, Tx makes $36.97 per hour and no skill is required.
I mean someone comes in and I listen to the complaint, then I type in their name, address, phone # and car details. Then I type something like car veers to right when turning left, customer wants quote and will supply on parts. Needs car by 4:30pm today. Then I call the customer, give a price, call customer when car is ready or call to quote a higher price, greet the customer when he picks up his car, print the bill and hand it to him and point towards the cashier. Easy. No thinking involved. A technician at my dealership makes $58+ per hour, some upwards to $115 hr. We pay the janitor $21.15 per hr.
No wonder t is offering $5,000 to hire on. No one is taking their jobs.

I'm trying to understand. Please be patient.
So unskilled minimum wage is around $15 per hour - fast food workers for example.
And at&t thinks a splicer or internet repairman/installer is worth only $20 per hour?
Splicing correctly takes years to get good - it's more than twisting a green to another green wire and diagnosing, installing or repairing internet issues is more than replacing a modem. I mean my brother worked for the daughter of a VP who had a degree in marketing from West Tx A&M who only knew how to drive out to a splice site and look to see that safety cones were out and she was making $75k as a 1st level. She's now a VP in HR making $300k and is still as clueless as she was as a 1st level. Daddy was a President level. No body in their right mind would take these jobs. Stankey/Santone appear to think these jobs are not skilled and yet these jokers are pulling in MILLIONS of $$$$ while running this company into the ground. Amazing!

AT&T didn't have qualified employees when they were paying $40. Just overpaid.
