Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

What's the worst thing about working at GM?

For me, it is the favoritism that does not allow the best employees to get promoted. You?

For me, it has got to be the constant flipflopping “plans” they had for the international markets a few years back. The sheer number of people who lost our jobs was mindblowing.

Nice play. Used the corporations rules against itself. Its always company vs the people. Sock it to them every chance you can.

Mostly it's the hiring practices and the way they treat contract employees. Often, contract people will be cycled throughout a career at GM, in different functions, in different roles, that build up a significant skillset, and contribute in very meaningful ways. Kind of how they run track engineers through different groups and functions, that's all contract people are. People that acquire lifetime talents in various groups and functions. However, when it comes the time for a major layoff every few years, contract are out the door. Usually it's on a Saturday, don't report come Monday. Often time it aligns with right before Christmas as a big kick to the head.

While every manager has the ability to bring in whomever they wish for a direct position, I actually called HR one time to inquire about their hiring policy. They stated that unless you have four (4) Bachelor or master degrees, even if you were God himself, they couldn't hire you. But seriously on a more realistic level, they said a manager and director can bring anyone in should they choose, but with ever raising requirements, few ever pass the HR sniff test for a direct hire position.

So, before I left GM for the very last time in my career, I cashed in my chips and turned lemons into lemonade. I called in some favors from my peers. GM has a policy that no direct employee can ever endorse, promote, or provide reference to anyone within or outside of the company. When I left, I left with dozens (as in multiple dozens) of personal references, names, positions, all submitted by direct GM personnel, that give one big middle finger to management and their policies. Good people will stand with good people no matter what. So with this information, I turned it into a share friendly version to protect them, as well as promote their kind words they shared.

Needless to say with that much credibility and recognition, and this was the first time in my career this ever happened, I actually had three (3) corporations submit offers to me in a matter of one week. You should have seen the looks in the interviews, when I laid down pages of references. In the end, the salary position that I accepted was pretty substantial, to the point that I don't know if GM could have rivaled it.

Thank you GM.

To keep up with inflation the raise needs to be 10% on average.

Then to offset the cost they'll need to layoff 10%

Union workers will get the raise without any layoff.

Just my speculation.

Just become "boss's pet" if you want promotions and good raises.
