Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Prospective Leaver

Anyone able to share their experience at other oil and gas companies, particularly in analyst type roles.

Feels that all these sorts of roles at Exxon consist of highly procedural, repetitive and mindless spreadsheet activities while developing little/no tangible skills marketable outside. Is it different elsewhere?

They take highly skilled engineers and make them accountants and magically after 2 years you are a supervisor with zero leadership skills and no transferable technical skills.

It’s good for your development they’ll say. In a world of cost cutting it’s amazing they’ll pay an engineer to do this type of work. It’s only because no one knows what to do with an accountant that does repetitive tasks, they know it’s a one way ticket to NSI.

Don’t worry, if they chose you for this job it means they like you and you’ll be taken care of for your next role…..it’s part of your career development.

Nope. That's the O&G biz in general.
Commodities like corn and pork bellies.
All the 'science' is done. All plastics are known.
Geology? Everything's carbon - you and me.

Unless you are an accountant or defense litigator, it's time to see you later.
