Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

How do they announce office closures?

Just wondering how, historically they have announced office closures?
Do they do a full office town hall and tell people in person, do they send an email etc.

The Oriskany closing notification was awful. It was so carefully worded we knew we were on the chopping block. Then a managing director told us we had 3 years working from home. The first lay off was two months after that in January. Then, there were many more in Sept. just waiting for my turn.

@aa+1jhftv2pq - yep after that weasel came several months prior and lied to our face telling us they werent looking at our location but one in florida instead. Then to hide in a room with hr on location and not even allow questions. Glad they fired that a--hole . Now sits an empty building cause their investors backed out the deal a couple months ago. I hope they are stuck with it now

Be prepared. They won’t let you know until the last minute. If you are within 50 miles of another office, they will force you to go there. They may even try to get you to relocate to a growth location. They are always happy for you to quit or if they can terminate you for cause. Remember that the company does not care about you.

As soon as we found out, a wrecking ball went through the wall. They really didn’t give us enough time.

@bb+1jhftv2pq Omg why do people find the need to correct spelling? I find this way more annoying than the error. Uth oh… did I spell than right? We’re all adults. We all know what they meant. This isn’t being graded. It’s not like we can go back in and edit after it’s submitted either. I see some grammar errors on your correction! You have an extra space after losing and the quotation mark and you should have your punctuation before the closing quotation mark after loosing lol. But you know you know what? I don’t really care. Just pointing out we’re all human and this isn’t being graded!

I know when my office closes (yes, it’s a when) we will be forced to go into the city. At that point I will have to resign if I’m still here. Added commute cost plus additional daycare costs due to upcoming 5 day workweeks will add up to close to $1k per month. I definitely do not make enough to take that hit.

Yup.. I was there at WP for the whole thing and we got sc--wed. I complained that this caused hardship since NJ Transit also has cut back on service and frequency due to declining ridership - and no, its not COVID .. it’s
Companies that sensibly allow WFH and flex. I was told that’s the way it is and I need to follow the mandate. All this steaming Bull pile about work life balance is a lie. I now have a 4 hour day commuting 2 in the am and 2 going home. Thank you BNY for caring about me

FYI, it's "losing " jobs, not "loosing". Don't our employees possess basic spelling skills?

For Woodland Park they invited everyone to a Teams meeting in December, read off a script, and said nobody is losing their jobs. They mentioned that based on your distance to the new office people could be remote. The move happened in May, but despite many staff being >50 miles away from the new office (the stated criteria), nobody got a remote exception. We asked for parking cost consideration and agile flex remote (~1.5 days in office a week), all got shot down with a big F U. Staff who were remote prior to pandemic for years were forced to return.

!!!!! The MD came in person and did a town hall saying that nobody is loosing their jobs, we just have to relocate to another office!!!!
Oh fer shurrrre… nobody is ‘loosing’ their jobs. If I change my name to Satish or Singh and relocated to Pune, I’d still have trouble.

Yes, it was announced in advance, about 3 months or so. The MD came in person and did a town hall saying that nobody is loosing their jobs, we just have to relocate to another office. Very decently handled.

It was a year ago so I don't remember the exact timing but someone had posted the details of script on this site before we even got the invite. They sent the actual invite either the night before or morning of, if I remember correctly.

For the Wellesley office closure they sent out an all-employees Teams meeting about an hour in advance then read a four minute script from a New York conference room and immediately ended the call

I can only speak for Oriskany but they made everyone come into the office for the announcement. Then they sent out a Teams invite and the site lead, HR rep, and one of the former Ops leads all sat in a room and read the script while we all called in from our desks. It was pathetic.
