Thread regarding Cenovus Energy layoffs

Pros and cons of going to a smaller company

I am underpaid here and this job is not worth the daily stress. I'm still here only because it's hard for me to start from scratch. However, lately I have been thinking more and more about trying to find a job in a smaller company. Some try to talk me out of it, and some think it's a good idea. Any advice would be appreciated.

I did as well and love it.
No regrets going to a smaller company and I got my life back with less overtime. There is more scope of work but that’s what leads to opportunities for senior roles. Not for everyone if you like a narrow focus. I compare this to my prior role where I felt like an assembly line worker.
I always enjoyed working for Cenovus and still have many friends that work there, but this change worked well for me personally.

Smaller companies expect you to wear 3 different hats, your workload will significantly increase. Organization in general is significantly worse. I left a very large company for a small one and regret it.

Pro: You're on the front lines and have an opportunity to build something. Less people = less decisions made by committee. Very tactical and move quick mentality. It's exciting (in my experience)

Con: It could flop and you leave with nothing. Risk reward.

Watch out if they throw the term "family" in an interview or initial discussion. Business isn't family.

Good luck and rake in the equity.
