Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

T to follow Zucks lead, and slash SWE positions.

Folks the writing. Is on the wall, now the zuckerberg claimed the elimination of many mid-level SWE jobs, you can bet T executives are busy drafting policies to do the same. Everyone is upset about RTO , your all gonna be really pi---d when they start having us do mandatory tests and scored relative to Ai. Models... A new form of stack ranking is coming our way . Of course they'll mask it as just workforce training ...

We built thousands of homegrown applications to run the business, support the network etc. Most code is now outsourced to vendors who have no clue as to what they are doing. Most good SWE if still here and not outsourced have had to transition into d-mb downed Architecture, Product or IT support positions to keep their job.

AI is a buzzword, AI doesn't exist. We have Language Models that people call AI. They are not the same.

AI sounds cooler so now we have AI toilets and AI microwaves. People are d-mb

Majority of the dev work is already overseas or h1b’d out, they can hire 3-4 of them for every 1 American worker. ATT followed that model a long time ago, so if you are complaining about our software and systems, there you go. Some groups like NEO still have US devs, but the rest of the company there are very few. AI is neat and all, but it’s not there yet. Going to be at least another decade before it can do what they are claiming.

If Att owned the iPhone you’d have to go to 6 databases to change songs on Spotify.

We have many software engineers in the network operation. We create a lot of the software pertaining to ticketing, alarms and helpful GTOC algorithms. Our coders develop a lot for the core network.

You think ATT has invested the same money in AI as META?

Are you stoooped? It’ll be a decade before T gets the technology META has now. By then I’ll be riding off into the sunset with my pension and 401k

“No offense but what do AT&T software developers actually develop? Everything is Salesforce and Workday. Everyone uses Windows or Macintrash. Or phones. Seriously. What software does AT&T write?”

This is one time that “ask your supervisor” makes sense.

Dont forget ServiceNow. No more software development other than building flows between systems. That’s why ATS is going bye bye.
