I got moved to Baytown and have noticed a huge number of employees related to each other. Mostly brothers, sisters and mothers daughters. I was talking to one person about someone and they said oh yeah that is my cousin. I do not feel as if I have a chance at this place. In upstream there were a few related employees but Baytown seems to be extreme. It did not mater if it was refining, chem plant, BOP or BTEC they are all full of relatives. I got the inside on the politics and power structure of the families. I learned how they protect each other and their groups. Most of these a holes are arrogant and say things like my grandfather worked here and my father as well. The whole site reeks of nepotism and promotion of the families. My assignment is only going to be for a couple of years on loan from an upstream site so thank god. I cannot wait to escape this he-l. One observation most are white trashy types from the Baytown area. I have been asked so many times if I was from Baytown Not. Baytown is quite a different place from the rest of the world and not in a good way. To be fair Baton rouge has a similar nepotism problem as well. It is a problem when you are ranked against the family.

So, do you squeal?
Baytown like southeast Texas and Louisiana is a shithole. I have never encountered such backwards thinking people in my life like the ones here. Some real inbreeding going on think deliverance banjo scene. I am stuck in red neck he-l. There are some pig f uckers as well "squeal like a pig boy".
But Xom saves money and no bias. Sarcasm. You have to out live these people. Be nimble to bounce around. Tuff statement to say but life is too short to fight with these people.
All small towns where em employment is about 2 or 3% of the total jobs in the town must pull from a relatively small group of highly educated or highly vocational group. These are usually the same groups of families that educated their kids, developed their vocational skills, sent them off to college or vocational school. AND THEY WANT TO STAY IN BAYTOWN. very hard and expensive to recruit people to BAYTOWN. So people living in BAYTOWN HAVE AN ADVANTAGE
Yet, you do, so therefore, like it and quit whining.
It is same at uk Exxon site. Cliques and nepotism. The downstream sites are toxic to work in.
I don’t see how this an issue for people moving through a plant assignment for the experience. There are a lot of critical plant jobs that require long tenure and experience. Those roles are naturally going to appeal to locals with strong family connections to Baytown. These guys are not competing with you for your career aspirations. Learn to get along with people who are on different career paths and your life will get much better.
They are welcome to it and their toxic leaders
Joliet is way worse!!
Whaaaa, whaaaaa, so unfair… deal with it Peon and know your place.
Yes they are mostly white anglos and a few hispanics that make up the Family.
That’s what happens when you give hillbil--es and chicanos six figure jobs, they bring the whole pack of trash then move into new Baytown or Dayton
Cry much?
Reflection of this country's Democracy! Look at your government. You voted for them!
You can tell who has relatives working there. The related act as if they own the place and no one can tell them anything. If you encounter one you will know or they will let you know who they are. I have never seen anything like it. One person in the past complained to HR that they were being unfairly targeted by the family. HR told them it was not against the rules to have family working at the same site. HR also said the ranking was fair and related supervisors should not have any preferential say in ranking of employees or related employees. The complainer was labeled a troublemaker and piped a few years later. The whole family turned against this complaining employee. The employee left as there was no hope of passing the pip because one of the relatives was administering the pip. The whole family and their allies will be against you if you defy them.
Not just Baytown....just sayin.
Reeks of nepotism
I was duped into taking this assignment and wondered why no one else wanted it. I thought it was just like upstream but was I wrong. I visited the site beforehand and did not notice the problems. It was only after a few weeks that the truth was revealed. I am an outcast at baytown and seen as an outsider. No one is helpful or friendly. It is very toxic. It is almost as if they want me to fall on my face and fail. I needed some office supplies and asked around. I was told there were none and had to get the admin to order some for me. I saw some ones desk with loads of the supplies I needed. I have worked at several upstream sites all over the world and none were as bad as this.
Ultimately, your frustration is valid. It’s hard to feel like you have a shot when the whole site is set up to protect and promote family connections over merit. It might be worth having some conversations with trusted colleagues or mentors outside of Baytown to get their take on how to move ahead in such a system, or—if you’re really fed up—just focus on finishing your assignment and then finding a more level playing field elsewhere.
