Does your people leader know if your going to be laid off even if they have not done

Your performance review yet and even if you did get a quarterly bonus?

I have not heard of any layoffs occuring during end-of-year PRs. Thinking that the next round (large or small) will begin next week.

“People leader”

They’re afraid to say MANager.

There is a high cost to political correctness.

As a team, LL6 and up, they discuss every single person and know well in advance who will be cut.

Yes the majority do know, although they will claim they didn’t know or contribute to the decisions. If you probe there is often a lot of rationalization before an admission that yes they had a part in the decision. The LL4 made the decision is total bunk.

The dirty little secret is most LLx are terrified of rocking the boat and will happily go along with any scheme all the way up until the boat capsizes. Then as they scramble for a life vest loudly proclaim it was some other dudes fault.

In the 2022 blood bath, The LL4+ made the picks based on some algorithm from Boston Consulting. ICE powertrain engineering was obliterated because EVs were the future. Farley is the poster child for EV nonsense.

Would they already know before you have your review? if so then why waste time going over your objectives and goals?

"For the last several ‘rounds’ of releases, the names have been chosen by the LL4+, and the levels below them do not know, nor have they had input, outside of regular PRs. Very often, the LL5’s (and below) are just as surprised as everyone else. Anyone who even knows that cuts are coming (and when) has to sign a confidentiality agreement prior to being given that info, and they try to keep that list only to those who are required to know.

That doesn’t mean any current or future rounds would happen the same way, but that is how it has occurred in most orgs in the past."

Is that to protect against lawsuits (race, age, gender discrimination) by keeping the reasons why they are letting people go only known to a small group of people?
Like they get some sort of order from the board (majority shareholders) and they let go folks based on that order.

Yes we know, no we can’t tell. Well, unless you are a buddy we trust.

It depends on whether they are in the know; if they are, they already know when it will happen. Probably not the answer you wanted to hear.

The LL5 and LL4s use the input from PRs to make the decisions, but more than likely LL6 and below aren’t gonna know until it happens

@O. TBH, LL6s don't know... for sure. The request comes down the pipe, and your LL6 provides a list of the "undesirables". This list merges with the all the other LL6 lists at the LL5 level. The LL5 remakes the list, removing the cronies and adding any employee they don't like. Then the process repeats at the LL4 level.

At the LL4 level, the LL6s don't know for sure, unless they are "buddies" and get a peek at the list. Moreover, some LL6s are scared because they could also be the targets of layoffs, particularly if the LL4 is new.

My LL6 knows exactly who works more, and who is just twirling the thumbs. Some of the latter cannot be fired because they are friends and family of someone in the top. So the LL6s know more of who will stay, than who will be laid off.

Why does it even matter what your people leader knows or doesn’t know? Once you are out the door, who cares about any of those management people?

If by People Leader you mean LL6, I am guessing they may have more knowledge this time around than in 2023. If you've been at Ford for any amount of time, and this may be true everywhere, these types of actions/decisions are always somewhat fluid up until the final moment, so they may be reluctant to say anything until then.

They have mastered the art of lying to your face that they didn't know who was going to be walked out.

Not Ford, but other OEMS, I'd say perhaps no but it came on as a surprise to them.

I've seen as high as directors getting the surprise layoff, which lead to everyone below and including the management chain going bye-bye. When that confidence is gone, your position is also very questionable.

Of course they know! They have to recommend the manager who stays and who gets the axe. They simply play the d-mb or clueless. They don't decide that based on performance though. It's simply about who gets along well with the "people leader".
