Thread regarding United Healthcare layoffs

UHC Operations and Experience Voluntary Resignation Program

Just got word that UHC O&E has a voluntary resignation program where you will be paid out a severance package depending on years of service and grade level.

DO NOT TAKE THIS OFFER! I repeat, DO NOT TAKE THIS OFFER!!! If you voluntarily quit, you will not get unemployment benefits. If you get laid off involuntarily, you will get unemployment. Some states pay out unemployment for upwards of 26 weeks, which is much better unless you are one of the people with more than 25 years of service at this company.

Dust off that resume, and get to looking for new jobs folks. Writing is on the wall. If there aren’t enough takers for this “program”, you will be laid off. Think of this period as your paid job search. Put minimal effort into work, and apply to jobs on the clock. Network with others like crazy, and get out of the healthcare and health insurance industry if you can. The economic downturn is coming, and you don’t want to be stuck employed at a company that is effected by several heavy governmental changes.

Unemployment benefits is not going to float you especially if you have kids, a house, etc. may work for some of the lower class people but I would rather take my 7 weeks of severance and look immediately for a new role.

Here is my guess on the situation. I bet they initially had a RIF planned for the areas that weren't hitting their financial targets or couldn't attrit people fast enough to keep up with the automation being deployed. I bet they pivoted after the as----------n of Brian Thompson and with our public perception plummeting. They want to appear as the good guys and offer this voluntary separation as some type of middle ground to get those close to retirement or on CAPs out and hit what we've promised to the market/shareholders. They changed direction on the roll out with directors given terrible scripts to deliver vs a universal message being delivered by email to everyone. Eating my popcorn over here to see how it all plays out and how they restructure or shuffle folks around. Do I think it's a terrible offer? No. Is it great? Far from it unless you really are pushing retirement age.

In Florida, the maximum weekly unemployment benefit is $275. The maximum total benefit amount is $3,300. Nothing to brag about. Minus the income tax you have to pay. That $275 a week if some peoples grocery bills alone in Florida. $3300 won't even pay your property taxes for a year or home owners insurance.

Is there an age requirement, to qualify for the VSRP? When Optum Technology had its VSRP several years ago, I wasn't old enough (I think minimum age was 55?) to participate, but several leaders in my area did take the package.

Been w/UHC 5 years. Offering 8 weeks of severance. And work until May. Think I’ll stay until they tell me to leave. Get UE for 26 weeks at the max of $495 per week look for other work and start influencing. Sounds like a plan

Third time I've faced this. Seriously considering taking the buy out. Not sure if I can do this again. Shame on this company. No integrity

What about those of us close to retirement age? Would you take it then? I was also in that meeting and worked there for 25 years so far. I would get 8 months of pay which would get me to 62 but not 65 so no health insurance.

I'll be maxing out the dependents on my w4 to avoid them taxing it heavily. Keep in mind, its possible you might have to pay some back potentially at end of 2025 but I'd rather have it up front

Florida only pays 12 weeks and the maximum is $275 a week. It hasnt been raised since 1998 (the last time we had a democrat governor). Check what your state pays and for how long.

Also don’t forget to be mindful they tax that lump sum HEAVILY way more than a normal paycheck so look into that! 20-25% atleast is my best guess but def look into it

I’m just so disappointed with this company. I’ve really struggled the last few months resulting in a CAP and have been let down month after month, doing well enough to not be fired but not good enough to come off a cap, but now with this I have no doubt I’ll be included in lay offs after this offer thing is over, which by the way is laughable. 7 weeks is ridiculous, I honestly hope no one takes this voluntary offer unless you’re set up for something else great. (Yes I know others get other lengths of pay, but they’re all seriously a joke) every department is different but when they shut down an office in MN they paid 1 YEAR for severance so I was hoping for something at-least comparable to consider. I’m going to ride it out take the Three weeks of pay for the lay offs after the voluntary offer, and apply for unemployment. No I don’t want to/probably can’t even live off of unemployment and as frustrated as I am with the company I feel it will be difficult for myself to get something of similar pay, remotely or not, with my qualifications. I got in on what I consider a whim after many many applications so I don’t have the degree to fall back on. Which brings me to my next point, I’d love to take the package as cr-ppy as it is but it’s also extremely hard to find employment now to say I can start in May?? So I have to wait till near end to hopefully land something bc if not I wouldn’t qualify for unemployment since it was voluntary. Regardless your going to get sc--wed don’t let them take your fall back option as well.

You’re right, they created it in November 2024, and have been knowing about it increasingly since January. All of it is in the Page Analytics, which you can find if you click on the views at the bottom of the VRSP page. This su-ks.

I would rather be unemployed for 26 weeks than work until May, and then have my severance for less than 26 weeks, like that makes no sense to me.

Why would you want to be on unemployment for 26 weeks, when you get a lump sum pay out & can find a job with getting that payout?
