Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

UHC Operations and Experience Voluntary Resignation Program

Just got word that UHC O&E has a voluntary resignation program where you will be paid out a severance package depending on years of service and grade level.

DO NOT TAKE THIS OFFER! I repeat, DO NOT TAKE THIS OFFER!!! If you voluntarily quit, you will not get unemployment benefits. If you get laid off involuntarily, you will get unemployment. Some states pay out unemployment for upwards of 26 weeks, which is much better unless you are one of the people with more than 25 years of service at this company.

Dust off that resume, and get to looking for new jobs folks. Writing is on the wall. If there aren’t enough takers for this “program”, you will be laid off. Think of this period as your paid job search. Put minimal effort into work, and apply to jobs on the clock. Network with others like crazy, and get out of the healthcare and health insurance industry if you can. The economic downturn is coming, and you don’t want to be stuck employed at a company that is effected by several heavy governmental changes.

Apologies for saying everyone should not take it, I didn’t realize some states pay peanuts in unemployment funds. Definitely consider what the cost benefit would be for you guys. Me personally, unemployment in my state is great, so I’d personally choose that. Plus it will look better for a future employer that I was involuntarily let go with 30k others vs voluntarily quitting my job. Optics matter.

I’m pretty sure unemployment in total is a fraction of what they are offering in this Voluntary Resignation Separation Program. It is definitely something to think about.

My department got the same scripted cold hearted meeting it seems everyone got, but funny how there is still reqs for additional positions and working OT. Makes no sense to do company wide voluntary resignations when there's not enough people for the work as it is. Or this is strategy to layoff and hire or move people up at a lesser base wage to save money. Either way it's sickening and surely no integrity of their core values they've pushed for 10 years.

This is disappointing and very concerning. If I work in E&I and was not included in the meeting, am I potentially “safe” for now?

The way the meeting was conducted was very unprofessional. Out of nowhere we are offered this voluntary resignation cr-p after we had a record breaking year of profit. We are in the middle of getting our annual bonuses and raises and they drop this bo-b on us. No info as to why this is happening or why the need to lower the workforce all of a sudden to offer us this resignation package. So if we don't accept the offer, who will be the ones to get their names picked for layoffs when they do come? Now a life decision has to be made in less than 2 weeks, after working with the company 9.5 yrs. Very unsettling. Not happy...

Be sure to use up your PTO before voluntarily resigning. The company does not pay that out and you will lose it. I don't see much work getting done in the coming months here...

Don’t they pay severance during a layoff anyways? At least a layoff allows you to claim unemployment benefits.

What do they see coming? Afraid of what doge may find?

I'm in E&I as well, and it states E&I does not qualify for the VRSP, so we should have never even been allowed to view their "offer." Just another slap in the face. Our meeting was incredibly sh*tty. No emotion whatsoever. It was like a Dr with the worst bedside manner delivering your death sentence. How do they give us our reviews, and congratulate you on the raise you "earned" one week and tell you to voluntarily resign, the next week.

This "meeting" was cold and carefully calculated. I always knew UHC was shady!

If you don’t take the buyout and are laid off in 6 months, what guarantees to you have that UHC will pay you a severance? It states it’s up to UHC discretion. Just because you’re here for certain number of years doesn’t guarantee they will give you that. And if less people take it more people they will have to layoff meaning more money they would have to pay in severance, again at UHC discretion.

Telling people not to leave in a blanket statement is not good advice. Everyone has a different situation. This is an outstanding offer for someone who is near retirement or wanting to change fields. For others it isn't a good option. Each person has to decide on their own.

Any i**** who is on the side of "I need to keep my job take the resignation" is so far in the boot stink that they have lost meaning in life. UHC is a for profit organization with 20 billion in net revenue for a year. You can find the answer of how little you mean to them anywhere. You can find out how little you mean to all the rich people that employ you.

I don’t understand how they can afford to let people go when calls have been back to back for months! They talk about making your calls longer to prevent burn out but that’s just cr-p.

I am in VA and the max amount I can get from unemployment is 326 for a month 4 weeks is only 1500. And to get the max amount you must have made 18,900 in two quarters…yea that’s impossible. Way to go for being transparent UHC. As a dedicated employee I am heartbroken and lost. To top it off the business leader hosting the meeting had the ba--s to start the meeting off by saying thanks for getting us through January, yes your welcome.

This is very chaotic and all due to who is in the white house. The new head of HHS you know will cut. I think Uhc is getting ahead of it because they get subsidies from Medicare. This is all a nightmare

Thursday, May 1, 2025: Employee separation date (Please note, some employees may have a different separation date, depending on their specific role within the organization)

An employee who elects to participate in the VRSP will receive the VRSP Separation Benefit. An employee who resigns without participating in the VRSP will not be eligible to receive these benefits.

No, the VRSP is a voluntary resignation program and not a layoff or reduction in force.

A VRSP Separation Benefit will be paid as a lump sum according to the following table and is based on the employee’s number of completed years of service (not rounded) and salary grade as of the VRSP separation date. Participating employees must carefully read and agree to the VRSP Terms and Conditions to receive the Separation Benefit.

The benefit gives you a few extra weeks of pay, that's all.

“If you were included in the meeting you are included in this volunteer program” except I’m not. We can still be laid off but we don’t have the ability to voluntarily resign. The resignation specifically excludes my department.

The way it was just presented today was total bullsh-t. No context to why it was being offered, no are there any questions or warm fuzzy feeling offered by site director. It felt very cold and uncaring. Here is a faq document and dates to sign up for more info have a nice day.

i think once the voluntary counts come in based on that they will start mass firing if counts are not met and they have to give 60 days notice (WARN) so with or without the voluntary resignation people would be let got in first week of March

I work in E&I and we were included in the call but the terms of resignation say our department is excluded. No one seems to have any answers. This seems to be an impulsive decision thrown together quickly.

I would rather be unemployed for 26 weeks than work until May, and then have my severance for less than 26 weeks, like that makes no sense to me.

Why NOT take it? If not enough take it, layoffs will be involuntary and more than likely without notice. If you want to take it, you still until May 1st to search for a new job AND you walk away with a lump sum.

Even if enough people leave, your job is still next to be cut. They are LITERALLY telling you they are over staffed and want to cut employees, and are going as far as voluntary resignation, meaning that the amount of people they want to cut, is a significant amount. Why would you NOT heed this warning, wait until it’s your turn to be laid off, and in the meantime, find another job?
