Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

GA - Severance and Unemployment Benefits

Has anyone been laid off from AT&T, received severance, and been denied unemployment benefits in the state of Georgia? I’m having the worst time getting in touch with the Department of Labor for clarification. I’ve applied for several weeks of unemployment now, they have been received by the DoL, but no payments have been made to me. Wondering if you can’t be paid Unemployment if you also received severance??

Had no issues here in Ohio. Laid off on May 9th, got my 6th month severance in early June and I think the unemployment payments started in mid to late June. Yep that's right because they were done on Nov 18th, got 26 wks. Not sure if that's just Ohio or everywhere. I'll be able to reapply at a year mark in May for another 26 wks. Didn't have any issues with the process though. Just called one day and I had to wait on hold for probably over an hour but then went through the whole process with someone, then they got me set up online in their portal, had to submit a bunch of stuff then payments started. You have to log in every week to submit an update with jobs you've applied for but that's about it.

OP—
You weren’t able to get another job after 6 months of severance? How outdated are your skills?

A lot of these posts are correct. You are not eligible for UE once you receive your Severance for the number of weeks the Severance covers. In my case I received 6 months of Servance ~45 days after I was surplused. So, I got about 4-5 weeks and then I am ineligible for 6 months. ALTERNATIVELY you can defer your severance until after the 1st of the year and get immediate and full UE. I wish I had known this as I would have deferred. GA DOL su-ks to deal with

It doesn't make sense to have any site in GA. There are no customers which belong to ATT there. Most of these southern folks get Tmobile(sic). It is like the CA. There is mostly ATT customers in CA. Hardly nobody gets Tmobile(sic) in CA. Some states have certain preferences is all. can't be changed

Um, what? First of all, AT&T Mobility is headquartered in GA. There are also more services than just mobility. Everyone I know who still has a home phone has AT&T.
None of which has anything to do with severance and unemployment eligibility. So, wrong thread, my guy.

You must wait until your severance money runs out. In GA the max unemployment you can receive if eligible, is 5000 total. Weekly max pay outs around $325 a week. In order to receive any money for unemployment, you must search & actively apply for 3 jobs a week. In addition, you must complete a lot of paperwork, to prove you have done your part. FYI- every time you need to log into your portal you will be required; to prove who you are. In addition, to answering questions & having a zoom call with agent. Good Luck!

In Michigan I got Unemployment and severance at the same time. The state treated the term pay as a bonus. This was 20 years ago. The CWA gave us a copy of the ruling.

Unemployment laws vary by state. Check your state laws to determine how it works for you. Stay on top of the application process. Make sure you are doing everything you need to to be eligible.
Lots of chaos right now for federal workers. That could cause impact.

Constructive discharge - This is what I had to list as my reason for leaving in order to receive unemployed benefits. But this was in PA.

In my state (not Georgia) I went through the enrollment process online at the state Dept. of Labor but in the end there was verbiage regarding actively searching for jobs and had to update weekly. I had another job lined up so never completed the application

“Believe in some states you have to deplete your severance before you can collect unemployment. Say you are currently making 1000.00 a week and you get 10000.00 severance, you must wait 10 weeks before you can get unemployment.”

Thank you!! I’ll definitely look into this.

“Why not just get a new job after severance?”

In order to obtain unemployment benefits, you must be actively looking for a new job and provide proof. You do know this, right? Or did you just feel like trolling?
