What if they fire us instead of laying us off so we would not qualify for unemployment?

If you are fired or laid off, both are considered involuntary. I don't see why unemployment would be denied.

Be careful! Some states will not allow you to collect unemployment if you resign. No matter if UHC says they'll not contest the unemployment claim. If you voluntarily leave, then it's a wrap with some states - flat out denial. Please weigh these choices carefully!

I live in a blue state and unemployment is so sc--wed up you never get anything. Legit people get nothing and the fraudsters always get their check. Unemployment is not the parachute people think it is. Not near the check that went away. Last time I was let go was denied since I got a severance check.

You would likely qualify for unemployment, but if you are in a "red" state the payout for that could possibly be much less than you would receive from the VRSP being offered now. Please research the unemployment benefits for your specific state.

Also, per the Summary Plan Description for UHC's current Severance policy, please be aware that if you do not accept the offer now and are instead on the receiving end of a layoff or reduction in force at a later date, UHC is not obligated to offer you any type of severance package at that time.

The SPD specifically states that when employment is terminated due to a layoff or reduction in force, it is at UHC's sole discretion whether or not you qualify for a severance package.
