ExxonMobil buys naphtha as China petchem complex enters test runs

(1) ExxonMobil's new plant to boost Asian naphtha demand

(2) Complex produces high-end petrochemical products in China

(3) Commercial operations expected in second quarter

(4) The plant also uses liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as feedstock

ExxonMobil has purchased several shipments of naphtha for its newly launched petrochemical complex in southern China as the U.S. energy major prepares for the formal start-up of the $10-B plant, industry and trade sources said.

The new plant is likely to buoy demand for the petrochemical feedstock and lift Asian naphtha refining margins in the near-term that are already supported by slower Russian supplies.

The complex, based in Dayawan Petrochemical Industrial Park of Huizhou, Guangdong province, is one of the few mega petrochemical plants in China wholly-owned by a foreign investor that are designed to produce high-end petrochemical products.

The ExxonMobil plant is set to receive a 55,000-tonnes (t) (489,500-bbl) naphtha cargo from Qatar's Ras Laffan refinery this week, the third shipment of the petrochemical feedstock into the complex since the plant was built last December, according to two trading sources and LSEG shipping data.

While the U.S. oil major sought second-half March naphtha deliveries earlier via a spot tender, it was unclear if a purchase had been made, said two sources who received the tender document.

The complex began test operations last month and by early February had produced the first on-spec pellets of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), an intermediary for making high-performance plastics, the company said earlier this month on its official WeChat account.

The complex, ExxonMobil's largest investment in China, consists of a 1.6-MMtpy flexible feedstock steam cr--ker making ethylene, a key building block for plastics and fibers used in a wide range of products like cars, packaging, sports gear and pharmaceuticals.

The cr--ker is designed to process a mix of naphtha and LPG.

Other key units at the Huizhou complex include two LLDPE units with a combined annual capacity of 1.2 MMtpy, a 500,000-tpy single-train, low-density polyethylene unit and two high-performance polypropylene facilities with a combined annual production capacity of 950,000 tpy.

Four industry and trade sources familiar with the plant's operations said the plant may enter commercial operation in the second quarter.

A China-based ExxonMobil representative declined to comment on the timeline of the commercial launch of the complex and its feedstock procurement.

Great summary! I’ve seen it too many times. How’s that Russia deal going for us?
China will be the same. Xom will lose their bttts and keep doing silly cr-p thinking they know better.
Definition of idiocracy? Keep doing the same thing expecting different results. Especially hiring communists!

Great idea this plant, stupid Globalism at work.…. The Chinese have already stolen our technology / intellectual property…. All the operating personnel will be CCP and we will train them to operate this plant…. In the next 3 - 5 years, we will wake up to an entire new tax regime tailored spherically for this plant…. And then we will sell the plant for Pennie’s on the dollar to the CCP, and that will be that….

Do not believe me…. Refer to Ford, Volkswagen, BMW, and GM in China and how they fared or for that matter any foreign industrial manufacturer in China…. China now the largest car manufacturer on the planet to include EVs…. I wonder who they stole the technology from to do that on EVs? Tesla maybe…. How about Apple phones? Semiconductors?

We are id--ts…. America first a--holes…. Globalism is dead!

Speaking of same…. Venezuela, even though I do not support them at all, has a completely legitimate claim to the Guyana waters in which we drill…. JV with Chevron/Hess and again the CCP…. More intellectual property theft and assisting China, who are most definitely not our friends…. Anyway…. If Venezuela attacks one of our platforms or ships moving to and fro, will China come to our support? Will the USA? My opinion is not…. Why should the US taxpayer defend a private company drilling oil in a foreign country when we have more oil and gas than any other country right here in good ‘ole USA? The answer is we should not unless XOM wants to pay us the USA do so….

So that leaves it us to defend…. Private contractors? My thought is, we suspend buybacks…. Use the funds to purchase and refit a couple of US Navy surplus destroyers and fast boats…. Take the entire trading floor and task them to Woody’s Navy to defend Guyana….Make Tracey G. SVP and The Admiral of Woody’s Navy…. which would be the first transgender female to become an Admiral…. Tracey was actually Tracy the Man when he worked as a Captain for Exxon Shipping, took a couple years sabbatical and then reappeared as Tracey the Woman... Denny Houston sponsored and knighted they/them/she/her/he/him and the rest is history….

Woody’s Navy can fly the XOM, Hess, CCP and Rainbow Pride flags….
