Manager is Angry That a young guy rejected offer

We interviewed a "stellar" candidate for an entry level role, the buddy was well spoken and delivered pristine answers and had perfect grades. We got thru to the offer stage and he rejected....when my bossman called him to ask why what happened.. he said compensation was too low and hes too young to care about benefits. At this point my manager tried to convince him of the DB Plan which adds 28ish% to your base ... and the kid hung up on him.

Managers been sht talking him ever since...times are changing.

Guy is smart. Good for him. Wished I rejected the offer years ago. Would have saved me the misery and my career. I now have to build it back. But now I’m flourishing at another company. Money is just as good and culture is 1000 times better.

Lesson learned. Don’t go for the money. They will make a lot of promises. It’s a game of bait and switch.

We had a similar situation in our group. The guy we were targeting to hire was nice, but ultimately no amount of convincing swayed him. He was a sharp person working in the industry and I guess the interview process confirmed what he heard and read in the public. The previous poster is correct, people are catching on to EM's toxic nature now... Money won't say them... Yikes!

Speaking as if Exxonmobil is a farmer:
If there is a hole in the fence and the cows keep getting out, then does it make more sense to fix the fence or go to the market to buy loyal cows.

Off to the market to recruit

This is a trailing indicator.

EM might have seen this coming but did not care because can just hire 4 Indians and still save 50% of that single US salary. You read that correctly, the Indian salaries are 1/8 US salaries.

He refused to drink the Kool-aid, wish I had been that smart years ago during my recruitment.

By the time the new employee reaches 35, there will be no defined benefit plan. The DB will be frozen and grandfathered for all new employees.

Hard to benefit from a pension when your company is actively seeking to fire you and replace you with Indians and failed GM executives.

The genie's out of the bottle. Now people know how bad it's inside Exxon. How badly the employees are treated. How little Darren cares about the employees. Nobody's going to join Exxon unless they're desperate for cash. Exxon's done in the USA.

The industry and workforce views on “careers” have evolved, however ExxonMobil still refuses to change. Hard to believe eh?

No young person would see themselves working for the same company for the entire career making first job DB plan a moot.
