Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Anybody relocated to Dallas with family and Kids?

How was your move and what are some areas with great schools closer to office because the commute from Frisco and Plano itself is like an hour each way.

Depends upon your budget. I have a 10 minute commute to the office and kids are in excellent public high schools. Don’t listen to the suburban naysayers - there are great public DISD schools in Dallas if you are in the know and can figure out the magnet and IB options. We left private for public. One kid in my son’s class is a son of an ATT officer who could easily afford best privates. (This is not HP). Of course housing prices have tripled since i moved here - so I honestly wouldn’t move here unless you wanted to for other reasons beyond keeping a job.

When you work with people from NJ vs TX, it becomes very obvious just how much that early education investment pays off.

Truest statement I've read on this board.

100% true. I know someone who this happened to, personally.

Oak cliff has a pretty decent school system and also close by for your commute.

Most delusional post of the week award here. No amount of education makes people smarter, and statistically speaking the IQ and SAT test scores get better the lower the amount spent per student. Feel free to look it up.

“Texas ranks between number 40 and number 44 in most national rankings for K – 12 education. Native Texans will tell you this school is great or that school is great, but in general, they really aren't. Funding per child is roughly 33% of states like New Jersey It’s no wonder why the employees in NJ are so much better.”

It’s literally night and day.

So let me get this straight. AT&t, a multi billion dollar company, cannot pay a living wage in a city that they are forcing you to move to? Wow, that’s Rich!

I did, in the first wave back in 2013. We started out up in the northern suburbs. It was a one hour commute, with me taking the train. When you say good schools, everything is relative. If you come from the northeast, no school district here will be good compared to that. Texas ranks between number 40 and number 44 in most national rankings for K – 12 education. Native Texans will tell you this school is great or that school is great, but in general, they really aren't. Funding per child is roughly 33% of states like New Jersey and Massachusetts. That said, there are some very nice neighborhoods closer to the office that feed into the Lakewood school district. It's frankly better than the suburban districts and I have a 10 minute commute now.

Listen man I’m from Dallas and I don’t live there anymore and I would never move back there. However, I will tell you when I did the public school system is atrocious. I had to keep my kids in private school and it cost a fortune so keep that in mind. The only good thing about that place is the food and shopping. There’s nothing else to do there no parks nothing. It’s the land of the $30,000 a year millionaire we used to say. Oh I forgot to say you better drive a nice car or you’ll be scoffed at. Having said that the Fort Worth side of the house could not be more different. It’s a longer commute in some ways, but the people are much more real, not pretentious and good folks again I was born and raised in Dallas and I would never move back there unless I absolutely had to . Do with that what you will, and good luck to all

Financially speaking, it’s not worth it. Housing prices and interest rates are double what they were. You would have a monthly net loss on just the mortgage. Do the math, not worth it.

I relocated to Richardson which has great schools. The transition was pretty smooth. The DART commuter train provides an easy and fast trip downtown.

OP could not get a job in his favorite hometown. so considering a move is not bad. May be it will help with other aspects of life or get a new job

Had to come in here and read what id--t is considering a move to Dallas with family and kids. Just because T destroyed your life you want to destroy your families? Really? I have been reading up on the art of profiling and I would guess the OP is bald (not thinning but so bald he shaves his head like the stinkenpoop). L3 or L4 taking the bait thinking T is providing you with an actual long term job offer in Dallas. Desperate to hold on to those worthless stock options with a strike price of $42. Did I miss anything? Probably an encouraging wife with a positive outlook and has no idea how miserable things are at T because are never able to read the room correctly and share with her how hopeless things really are. Sure, move. Say hi to the stinkage for me.

You have to get WAY outside of Dallas if you are wanting a decent public school environment for your kids. And even then, if it is anywhere near affordable those neighborhoods are likely "in transition" or will be very soon. You might want to consider private school or home school.
