Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

Ineffective Leaders and Misguided Architects

I’ve been an SL at this company for 13 years, and I’ve never seen so many managers—especially L8 employees—who seem unsure about their roles. There are numerous L8 GCLs, CLs, SLs, and Architects who don’t appear to know what they’re doing. Architects, in particular, often provide the least value: they tend to ramble, produce useless Confluence pages they never revisit, and set up pointless calls that waste everyone’s time. Fidelity should start tracking Zoom call durations and action items from the calls , because these meetings mostly serve as a platform for managers and architects to display their presence and share their useless opinions. My L5/L6 are better than the architects we have in the product area .Many of these architects withhold information instead of passing it on, apparently as a way to maintain their perceived importance.

To illustrate, one of these architects once explained a design to me, then I consulted ChatGPT. ChatGPT essentially indicated that the architect is an id--t .

Architects are completely ineffective, mere relics of an outdated era that's on the verge of extinction. Many of them, particularly those at the L8 level, waste time with pointless discussions and simply copy AWS documentation into Confluence pages. They should be penalized for setting up countless meetings and wasting others' time .As an SL, I rarely include them in meetings anymore.

Somehow a post about lazy L8 employees gets comments about white women and DEI. Racists and s-xists.

Well they have gotten away with cheap labor for years.. Poor immigrants who are promised sponsorship get paid minimum wage for many occupations. It has now come to the attention of Wage and Hour Division at the US Department of Labor. Expect an audit very soon of all sponsored employees and their managers.

There are individuals who are covid hires as permanent exception from being into the office.

It's sad to see these individuals being promoted or given opportunities to run the show by firing g-ns on the shoulders of high performing individuals.

While the rest of us temp workers have to follow everything "by the book", work harder or run the risk of being let go, contracts not renewed

White men are 31% of the US population. They SHOULD be a minority in any given company.

Non-Whites make more than the Whites at Fidelity.

Gender no difference.

White men are last consideration for pay and promotion for the last few years.

I know.

Let's do a query on gender and pay and display the results.
white man - privileged, does what they want, promoted top earners
white women - constantly prove yourself to be seen, earn 20% less than a male.

others - accept what is given because it's less than the two above
SICKENING.

Not the OP, but no, Architect is not a code name. Relic of the waterfall software engineering age, the architect role lost its relevance in agile practice. We have a superb tech lead in our squad who contributes most of our architectural design but we intentionally delegate the design work to junior associates to help them grow and engage. Our dedicated architect does nothing but reverse engineer a C4 diagram and represent us in the countless X-X reviews with his fellow architects.

We can leave a few architect in place to do cross-functional alignment, the rest can be debased into the chapters they're supporting and do actual coding work. They don't like it? The door is open for them to leave.

Poor architects! Yesterday I noticed they injected an epic into our Jira board to track their time. Curious to see what stories they put in next? Pontification from armchair, 0 points?

@b0+1jqaqq86v, if you haven't noticed recently, your mentioning of the "In" word here leads to post deletion.

OP, I'm with you until at the very end when you mentioned ChatGPT. The fact that you used ChatGPT to see through architect's nonsense doesn't reflect well on you.

A widely successful product I personally owned and designed has one flaw that irks me, it's the result of caving to the boss of our designated architect. The finger print left by the guy keeps reminding me how useless and counter productive architects are and how they wrongly assumed the air of authority.

There are NO leaders from top down to some of the chapter/squad leaders. The down you go the more you see engineers with leadership and architectual potential. Bottom up is Fidelity's only succession plan! Leave a few kings and queens at top, cut the middle!

Indians

DEI

White women

Primary groups in charge of Fidelity now.

It’s all falling apart and they are too stupid to see it coming down around them.

As a fellow SL, I can relate to the post. Dealing with GCLs is frustrating because they often schedule calls on irrelevant topics and waste my time. On top of that, we seem to have far too many architects—most of whom are L8+—who are excellent at engaging in lengthy, unproductive discussions. This begs the question: do we really need so many architects? What value does that role truly bring, especially now, when cloud technologies and tools like ChatGPT are readily available?

I don’t think it’s as much a problem with those employees as it is the problem of our ever changing direction from the top and the insane confusion that seems to funnel down and these L8’s scrambling to appear to do something about anything.
