Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

What if you get laid off? What next?

Is anyone planning anything major if they get laid off? I don't mean find another job and pay bills same as now but a serious jump to a whole new profession or some sort of frugal travel, starts ups, open a good truck, etc. I can't be the only one looking for a better way of life.

Nope. My age discriminates me. My skills discriminates me. I would only have enough money for two months rent, child support ends, etc. I'd be applying to fast food joints as I already have a part time job just so I have a few bucks extra to take the kids out to eat!

If I get laid off, I'm definitely moving to a different industry, just for something fresh and new. I think I might like working at a start up that has a good culture. I'd like to be remote again, but not opposed to going into the office if the culture is right. I wouldn't mind going back to a government job but I'm the breadwinner so I'd have to make sure the pay is right. Once both my kids are in school and out of daycare I'll probably highly consider this move anyways if I haven't already been let go

“ Dell is the only company I have worked for not offering their employees free coffee. I'm not even mentioning breakfast and lunch. They could have done that just to offset that RTO sh.i.t show a bit.”

Agreed. I remember last year when Dell had the 3 day RTO. For the first week there were donuts in the break room but that’s all. And most of them went stale by the middle of the week. They offered some free Keurig pods but half the Keurigs in the building didn’t work. And some of them pods had expiration dates in 2023. Collaboration !

I found at that one of our recent laid off coders has entered a training program to be a dental hygienist. Another is applying to a paramedic program.

"wife was laid off in 2023. We ended up not filing as the money is horrible"

Do you not understand the money from unemployment is FREE?

When you get let go: for unemployment in Texas, they have to give you time for your severance to run out first before you can claim benefits. Also, don't be afraid to be your own boss. No one watching what you do, make your own schedule, wfh if you want. If you have a partner with a stable income, it's something to consider. Take yourself out of the rat race and breathe.

You make more working for ubereats or doordash than you do from unemployment. Just fyi. Also if you get a severance. You cant get unemployment till that time frame for your severance wears out. So if you get 5 months unemployment the. You have to wait till month 6 to file for unemployment. My wife was laid off in 2023. We ended up not filing as the money is horrible and working for a delivery app makes more money than unemployment ✌️

Liquidate my 401k, blow it all living like a king, and then paint a wall with the inside of my head when the money runs out.

Dell was one of the worse places, yet it comprised of two of the best I worked for - Data General and EMC.

I could move to Thailand and enjoy a decade of wanton hedonism before I run out of money

I’m currently doing a Masters in another field as I want to get out of IT, as IT is done.

I would stay unemployed until I finish my Masters and would mind people’s dogs as a side business.

Then, I’m planning to either get into an internship or do a PhD next. I don’t care about money anymore, I want my mental health back.

lol. think of the tens millions of dollars dell is saving on coffee beans.

I was at the local Toyota dealership and even they provided gourmet coffee to customers

HAVE you asked for WFR??

Stop moaning (sorry!) until you’ve done that at least. If you want to be let go, a faint heart will not get you any closer to what you’d like.

Managers can’t read anyone’s mind, make your position crystal
clear.

IF the opportunity was possible and it made the decision making easier for a manager, getting a volunteer solves a LOT of problems within the WFR process.

'cafe food is terrible'

Yes. I actually make it a point to get my lunch at the local QT-mart. I would literally prefer gas station food than the Cafe at dell.

I'm going to run a food truck and park it at RR5. I'll make a mint because the cafe food is terrible.
