I'm about done with this place! On our team staff call this week our manager said the general expectation is to work regular hours of 9 to 5. We can come in early but must work until at least 5 every day. I asked about reports she asks for that are due by 8 am every day and she said that 9 to 5 is the minimum but as salary employees we may need to work beyond that. They want to have it both ways and I'm over it!

In by 9 and out by 5. That's my full day. Take it or leave it, Johnny. You want to set specific hours and forced lunch hours and extra time, go ahead, but I'll still be in by 9 and out by 5.
“You chose Network Operations. Others did not. Be an adult, just this once, and live with the consequences of your decisions.”
Talk about an id-iot who missed the point!
No one is complaining about their role or hours. The poster was highlighting that not all roles fit into a 9-5 set hours, you reterd!
So thanks for making my point you big dummy.
Are they getting their work done?
Exempt employees are paid for the job, not the assignment. If they want to change the rules, they better be prepared to start paying overtime because that's how it works.
9 to 5 schedule is the local mandatory office hours. Working outside this schedule is permitted.
“You can still come in at 6 to secure a desk. Just start staying on until 5 and pick up some extra tasks to fill the additional time.”
Not gonna happen boss. F U

News flash! Each job is different from others, and may come with different rights and responsibilities. Of course Network Operations is more time-critical than Marketing. A little bit of nuance will help you comprehend.
Good news is that we all can strive for the positions that best meet our needs. No one forces us.

“ Why no RTO in India? Talked to several folks and they don’t have to go in to the office.”
Yep. They get to work ‘remote’ from their mud huts.

“ She said they might start looking at those who don't work until at least 5:30”
I presume you mean local time(s), yes? IF they try to mandate that, they’re flirting with further lawsuits. A competent company doesn’t treat salaried employees like hourly factory workers.
Hahaha! Guess all of us at the Network Operation Center will just work outages between the hours of 9-5.
How would that be?

As others have stated...
It's 90 miles one way for me in greater metro traffic (bad traffic city).
If I leave my house at 5 AM, I can be plugged in at 6:30 AM or so.
If I leave my house at 7 AM, I am probably not arriving until 10 AM. No exaggeration.
If I leave work at 5PM, I am not home until 7:30- 8 PM.
“Are they putting in 8 hours?”
Were the hours completed during the right time at the right location doing the right things?
“The people gaming the system coming in at 5 and leaving at 1 are to blame for this.”
Fact
Are you d-mb as a rock? Regardless of when they start, their manager can look at the hours worked on the tracker. Whether someone starts at 5 or 9 is irrelevant. Are they putting in 8 hours? Are they getting their work done? That’s all that’s should matter. I apparently work with a lot of imbeciles.
The ever moving goal post. Will you obey your Master?
"The people gaming the system coming in at 5 and leaving at 1 are to blame for this. It's pathetic how lazy people are leaving so early and then they fill our sears up leaving us with no workspace when we get in"
It is not gaming the system. It is about being the most efficient employee and getting the most work done. When I leave for work in the morning it takes me 15 minutes to get to work if I leave at 5am. In the afternoon, regardless of when I leave work, it takes me at least 45 minutes to get home. Most of my work requires no input from others. However, most of my teammates are in eastern Europe and they are not required to delay the start of their day by 6-7 hours to meet US time zones. So, it is better that I start my day when I have more overlap with my team. That is the reality of a company that offshores the jobs that could easily be done domestically.
So, GFYS. This is the culture that Stank created. This is Stank's fault. The only difference between now and pre-RTO is that now I do "8, and skate cause it can wait". I do not put in the extra 2-3 hours in the afternoon that I did prior to RTO 5X.
Leadership will use the same rubbish “collaboration” as reason when most teams are spread across multiple locations. But shout out to the mindless mgr in Atl with headcount in Cali that schedules 8AM calls.
“Hey I admit I come in early at 6. I can get a desk and get work done before back to back to back calls all day long. Usually I leave after 4 but guess what, if my calendar clears and I can leave at 2 one day I do.”

Usually I leave after 4 but guess what, if my calendar clears and I can leave at 2 one day I do. I don't know if they can or can't legally require us to work 9 to 5 or whatever but as a human being I hope they have the heart to understand if I've worked 8 hours and usually work 10 most days or more that if I take one friggin day off at 2 it is okay when I've already worked 8 hours at that point. Just. Have. A. Heart.

For our team they just said we have to work until at least 4:30 and get 8 or more hours every day. There is no specific start time so I guess I can work 10 to 6 if I want. They were more concerned with people leaving at 2 or 3 every day.
Exempt just means if you work less than 8 hours or more than 8 hours they cant cut your pay and they don't have to pay you extra. They can still fire you for not working 8 hours a day or not being there when they tell you to. The 9 to 5 office always existed this way before working remote was an option.
We were told 8:30 to 5:30 for Atlanta and 7:30 to 4:30 in Dallas starting in June for our team. At least they gave us 2 months notice to prepare for childcare and driving kids to school.
Reminds me of something I heard from my leadership regarding the non-functional hour reporting app, which was “you’re expected to work 8 hours, but many people put in closer to 10 a day!” Give me a fu--ing break. I don’t care.
"Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, employers may require exempt employees to comply with scheduling and tracking procedures, such as working certain days and times, being available by telephone, email or text and recording hours worked."

“When we complained we were told the other 3 to 4 hours can be done remote as if that makes it okay to require 60 hours a week work weeks.”
That is must SO wrong. I’d sure check the legality of that one.
Make sure you all keep accurate time of those extra hours. It may come in handy should a lawsuit come about, even years from now.
"I'm a retail store manager and guess what I am exempt salary and have set hours on the schedule every day for 9 hours a day and so does every other RSM. Welcome to the club!"
That is true the RSMs are also exempt but they can't just come in at 4am and peace out at noon. They have specific time shifts assigned. Sometimes they are scheduled to open and sometimes they are scheduled to close. They can't just decide to work whenever.
Your manager or business unit can definitely say you need to work 8:30 to 5:30 so everyone is together and collaborate. Before covid this wasn't even a question it was normal and expected.
“In our organization the peoplenin California do start at 6 because we follow dallas time 8 to 4 nationwide. Yes that is 9 to 5 for Atlanta and 6 to 2 in California. The California people have to move to Dallas or Atlanta soon anyway.”
And that is the way a realistic company handles things: with common sense and compromise. Perfect.
However, the comment implied was that it was okay to require the West coast employee to work long hours not required of the East coast employee. NOT realistic or fair
I'm a retail store manager and guess what I am exempt salary and have set hours on the schedule every day for 9 hours a day and so does every other RSM. Welcome to the club!
We support sales teams that have customer facing hours stretching from 7am to 7pm nationwide local time. So that means we have to have support coverage from 6am to 9pm Dallas time. We used to have some people work early and some late but now we all have to be in from 9 to 5 starting May 1st those will be the only times our 8 hours counts even though half of us have to actually start at 6am while the other half has to work until 9pm. That means 11 to 12 hour days every day at a minimum starting in May. When we complained we were told the other 3 to 4 hours can be done remote as if that makes it okay to require 60 hours a week work weeks.
“I have to do a daily report by 7:30 AM. I arrive by 6:45 AM to get that report done. If I have to work until 5 every day that is over 50 hours a week that I am required to work. I understand we are exempt…”.
In an exempt status they cannot have it both ways. Either say you are exempt, get the work done in how ever many hours it takes or if they are telling you your set hours you are no longer exempt and are entitled to OT for overtime hours.
Plain and simple and the law.
"You want CA people to come in at 6 to accommodate you? Maybe you need to work California hours. See how that works?"

“I will be pi---d if my CA teammates don't start coming in until 9. That's noon Eastern! And they won't be able to reach us if they take an hour lunch at 1 (Pacific) and expect to talk to anyone in Atlanta or New Jersey after. We'll be gone!”
You want CA people to come in at 6 to accommodate you? Maybe you need to work California hours. See how that works?
When you have people across the country working together there can be a small window when everyone is at work.
Be aware of the time differences and deal with it, work it out accordingly and get over yourself
No one should have to adjust their hours for someone across the country, especially in today’s environment
I’m told we are 24/7/365 in my group. We work a ton of hours, yet only the 8 in office count. I track my time to the minute even the nights and weekends. When the time comes, a jury or judge is going to have a field day with all the labor violations at this place. FAFO.
Anyone else in dallas have a manager that requires them to send pictures of the elevator times in teams everyday when arriving and leaving? She says it is to "protect" us in case the hours report is wrong.
I have to do a daily report by 7:30 AM. I arrive by 6:45 AM to get that report done. If I have to work until 5 every day that is over 50 hours a week that I am required to work. I understand we are exempt but that feels wrong to require that all the time and not as an occasional exception. What is to stop them from being 12 hours a day x 7 days a week? Where does it end?
We were told last month we have to work 8 to 4. If we come in earlier those hours don't count for us.
I saw a post mentioning this earlier this week so I asked my boss. She said they might start looking at those who don't work until at least 5:30 but they aren't ready to set that expectation yet and to not worry about it. She said it may not even happen. Could be different in your unit though.
I arrived around 4:45 am today. Off at 12:31 pm
