Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Department Closing Roanoke

The online fraud department was notified their department would no longer be in Roanoke yesterday. They are keeping the locations in Tempe and Charlotte. They were told their department is overstaffed but they have been hiring for this department in the Philippines and India. They were told that they could transfer to a lower position in credit card customer service. That is a slap in the face to employees that started their careers in customer service and moved on to higher support positions. I had a conversation with a group of people in the parking lot and they were told nothing else today. Apparently, the collections department is sending a handful of employees to credit card customer service too. The option for severance instead of a transfer was not given as an option upon notification.

It’s better than not having a job tho. The analysts and support employees weren’t given an option to take demotion at all. Instead they were given a layoff date to be kept on to train their replacements. Let’s not forget the scarce number of jobs the ROC has had recently. Quite conflicting they said 1,100 new jobs were coming in, they finessed that wording quite well. I was told their entire fraud department is being removed from Roanoke completely. Something more sinister is going on. I know I’m glad I jumped ship when I did.

Factory jobs used to pay for a stay at home parent and full early retirement with a middle class lifestyle. These guys owned houses, cars and even owned fun things like boats. Maybe you weren’t old enough to remember. They stayed at those jobs their whole career too. Those jobs may not have been for everyone, but much better than being in a call center all day. Now we just have a few jobs that pay well and everyone else is in a low paying, no college-required job with no benefits except maybe access to a 401k.

The only factory work that paid "well" was highly skilled. Where do you supposed the folks getting laid off from these jobs go pick up those skills at this point in their career?

Let's face it, the jobs lost overseas 10-30 years ago are GONE! Stop the bleeding of new jobs, those are the ones we have more control over. Put a 300% tariff on ALL payroll (in perpetuity) for all jobs that an US company offshores. Make the pitiful salaries they pay them equal to what someone would earn here. F the greedy American corporate overlords.

Yeah I'm sure they mean overstaffed for that location as they've already outsourced many fraud positions overseas. Still though with the increase in online fraud these days you'd think that'd be an area with some job security.

Factory work used to pay well and provide good benefits. I would much rather work in a factory than sitting on the phone all day talking to customers for minimum wage. There is a huge turnover in customer service, but people used to spend their full careers working in factories.

Sorry this happened to you and your team. I've been told that to get severance the changes must amount to a "substantial position change". It sounds like that's not happening in your situation but it's worth asking your manager or HR about it.

Will the new tariffs help keep these jobs in America? Or are customer support people supposed to get jobs at the new factories that are being built?

There is something somewhere that if your job changes by x percent you can …. I’d suggest you find that and study it. Based on everything else coming out now, even tho Roanoke has great JDPower scores for customer service they may it out of there anyway.
