Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Tick Tock Strategy vs. IDM 2.0... Let's compare.

In Tick Tockb model Intel strategy for on time execution was to release/change the core micro architecture OR move to a new process node with each new generation. Don't change process node and architecture concurrently. This was a very successful strategy over multiple generations.

The IWM 2.0 strategy is starting from a point of being well behind on process technology and to accelerate the nodes to 'catch up' while simultaneously opening the fabs as a manufacturer. This means many new IP designs will get pushed through each new process node. It means manufacturing needs to devise an entirely new process for planning and building a wide range of SKUs. Meanwhile we are asked to work at a torrid pace and absorb large headcount reductions.

Can Intel catch up on process nodes while simultaneously learning a new business model that TSMC has perfected? In the midst of massive headcount reduction?

Without a doubt it seems like the outcome here will be binary... big success or big failure... nothing like steady performance of a tick tock tick tock tick tock...

Need to execute flawlessly but even then need a lucky break like a mistep from TSMC

Why would a company that competes with Intel trust them to build ICs for them? What happens if there is a capacity constraint? Who gets the wafers?

Also, doesn't TSMC have a lot of older technologies they support? Intel isn't a low cost manufacturer so is Intel going to support customers on older process or cut them off?

Didn't Intel try fab services before.. maybe 3 or 4 times in last 30 years?

Last time was when they made a big push into new businesses like web hosting, fab services, building computers that compete with customers... all of it was shut down.

I think the odds are pretty low of this working, unless China takes Taiwan and the TSMC fabs at Hsinchu
