Cliques in workplace

How does one handle cliques within team. It’s very subtle but constitutes to exclusion and a feeling of isolation . Due to Cliques / best friends within a sub set of people favoritism is also rampant and work opportunities missed. Did anyone have similar experience , how does one handle? Do you ignore and focus on work or network and make new friends outside ?

Rolling my eyes. You work to live, you don’t need to live for work. You don’t need a BFF at work, just be likable enough to say on managements good side and friendly enough to network. Who cares if there are cliques?? Maybe fake it until you make it, join a clique and then exclude others?? lol! This isn’t middle school.

I will say as a manager I try hard to not favor one person over another. It can be hard. For example I never talk politics but have a rep who constantly drums on about politics and their political view is dead opposite of mine. I just make non-committed answers but it’s hard not to dislike her for it. Make sure you are following common sense work etiquette.

I accidentally sat at the cheerleaders’ lunch table before they arrived for lunch. When they did, they body-shamed me into moving.
I tried to find a new seat, but there were none available with the drama club, marching band, goths, chess club, skate boarders, stoners, brainiacs, or jocks.
Thankfully the substitute teachers let me sit with them.

It’s important to try and have a good relationship with everyone on your team. A little trick I learned is to try and find out a personal fact about each person on the team. Maybe’s someone’s daughter runs track in high school, another person grew up in Michigan or went to school at Duke, some like travel or baking. I am a sports guy so I use that to bond with a lot of colleagues and clients. I also love movies so I talk about new streaming series or movies with a lot of my team mates. Find the common ground and get people talking about themselves or their interests. You may not become their best friend but at least it breaks the ice.
