Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

This "anyone can be replaced" mentality is such nonsense

Yeah, they can throw a warm body in your seat for half the salary, but good luck replacing decades of know-how and problem-solving skills. Leadership acts like experience is just a line item they can cut to save costs, until projects start failing and they realize what they lost. But sure, tell me again how lucky I am to still have a job while they race to the bottom.

To the OP. It was said earlier, "Anyone can be replaced is a fact.", and it is. Nobody is irreplaceable. However, I do fully agree with you that knowledge is being lost at an alarming pace and that experience is grossly undervalued. This has been the trend for a few years though. It's just far more blatant and magnified with the recent events.

The real issue from my perspective is leadership's misconception that everyone is "interchangeable". Org transfers and job swaps are seemingly done with little regard to an individual's strengths, experience, and fitness for the position. Likewise, i've seen people being accepted into backfill positions and/or promoted largly due to geography who never would have been considered prior to RTO.

“Anyone can be replaced” is a fact.”

Really? I’m a 12 year Java and Python coder with experience interacting with business stakeholders. I can have a conversation and decipher their needs and what their business problem is. I can write a complete feature and user stories and prioritize them and understand their dependencies and their value as an aggregate. When something fails I know where and why and take initiative to get it resolved. I can speak to tech nerds and leaders with no technical skills at all.

AT&T wanted another one of me and hired a person for our team that has 4 years of Python experience. That is all. WE ARE NOT THE SAME. They will strictly code to a feature. That is the beginning and end of their job. You will save nothing by letting me go.

Somebody thinks highly of themself. You think you're special b/c you're a programmer with social skills? You may be great at what you do, maybe even excellent, but you are not unique and far from irreplaceable. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Experience is really a way to get away with do little work. "What have you done this week?" "I have experience."

Your “knowledge” about antiquated systems and infrastructure won’t be missed.

It’s time to go.

“ Imho, we need to end all visa work programs.”

100% spot on! Insourcing & outsourcing is outright treason against American(s)/American workers. Those puppets on “C(r)aptiol sHill” are supposed to represent WE the (American) people & NOT these Machiavellian global corporations!

“ Replace the tech workforce by offshoring for cheaper labor to support the new stuff”

Just wait until they roll in the h1 visas for “skilled” trade jobs to replace all the field crews. Those Indians will do it for way less, no OT pay, never complain, or file a grievance.

Imho, we need to end all visa work programs.

Stankey mentioned needing to return to office to facilitate mentoring. Who is going to mentor the employees when you get rid of all the experienced employees. It was just another lie to make RTO/FTW sound justified.

This is EXACTLY what is happening everyday at T. Reason why T as a corporation, is made up of 40% badged employees and 60% contractors.

"replacing decades of know-how"
Means you will be obsolete. Replace the tech workforce by offshoring for cheaper labor to support the new stuff.
