Charlie was right.

Take out 5 levels of middle management.

Monitor and Reevaluate.

Rinse and repeat.

We have similar experiences. Massive organizational changes put our high performing group under a leader who loved taking credit for all of our work… even though we developed and executed the program. I walked.

Middle management is the reason I chose to retire this year. Reported to a senior manager for most of my career but when org changes resulted in more middle managers, thus changing my reporting structure, it became impossible to report to someone who clearly did not understand my role nor my responsibility. I became exhausted, and not because I am older {smile}.

I hope that this is true. What did Scharf determine with his spans and layers project…. that there were 12 layers of middle management when our businesses should require only 8? The biggest bloat of all surprisingly is in technology. Simply amazing how few in tech middle mgt have any tech knowledge.
