Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Any rumors about layoffs?

Some mention that there could be layoffs in January, but I hope that is not true.

at nike you should always have a plan b and prep for layoffs at the back of your mind. the current layoff cycles are about once every 3 years where you can expect a significant number of people to get termed. other than that, there are stealth layoffs on a much smaller scale that occur every year

I have been through a few layoffs and the big ones are always announced from leadership before it ever shows up on WARN.

Pay attention to earnings calls and stock market reactions and whether there are any ETWs left in your org to sacrifice.

Watch the WARN website. And be distrustful of rumors.

Also remember Nike exists primarily for one reason. It isn’t to serve athletes. It isn’t to inspire. It isn’t to innovate. It isn’t any of those feel-good marketing sound bites and platitudes. As a public company Nike exists to create shareholder value. That is the most important priority. If increasing shareholder value means trimming expenses then a layoff would not be surprising or unexpected.

The near-term is uncertain. China has big economic issues. Europe may have big economic issues come winter, followed by the U.S. shortly after. IF current trends hold Nike will likely need to seriously consider a layoff in the next 12 months. Right now however there’s still too much uncertainty to know the odds of a layoff.

You should always have an updated resume and a “Plan B” anyway. Job security ain’t what it used to be.
