Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

L8 Managers and their contribution .

What tangible value do these individuals actually bring? Most L8+ managers seem to contribute little beyond joining calls, repeating other's points, or derailing discussions with irrelevant input. It’s hard to find one with even baseline competence—were they hired specifically for their lack of critical thinking and lower IQ?

Worse, they perpetuate a cycle of mediocrity by promoting clones of themselves while sidelining high performers, often painting talent as ‘problems’ to justify their own insecurity. Their primary skill? Building a self-serving network to protect their interests and install loyalists at every level.

Long-tenured L8s (15+ years) are particularly terrible—their termination would have no zero impact. The organization wouldn’t miss a beat if they were gone tomorrow

It depends. There are very few good ones.

Lately, there's been a lot of women and minorities pushed into these roles. Uneven talent in that group.

L8/L9's are able to coast as they are because L0~L2 doesn't know how to held them accountable. As I suggested earlier: artifacts based contribution.

Prove your contributions with verifiable and attributable artifacts. "I led the team and we produced A, B, C". "What's your specific contribution?". "No, what's YOUR contribution, not your team members."...

If he couldn't produce any artifacts, whether its ideation, design doc, he can be removed.

Oh, absolutely—these folks are swamped with ‘work.’

  1. Religiously grace the office with their presence and skillful in keyboard-tapping
  2. Masterfully occupy Zoom meetings—someone has to say "Let’s circle back," right?
  3. Innovate by booking meeting rooms just to… sit in them.
  4. Unparalleled talent in looking busy—pacing the halls like they’re single-handedly curing world hunger.
  5. Generously bless teams with unsolicited TED Talks on "synergy" or "low-hanging fruit."

Frankly, we’re underpaying them. They’re basically corporate social workers—keeping morale afloat by giving us all someone to laugh at. More perks, please!
