The way that L3Harris handled the layoffs earlier this year was horrific. Instead of allowing people to keep their dignity and box up their personal items, they were walked out like criminals and not allowed to retrieve their personal property. Why?

L3Harris handles layoffs this way because of its toxic culture and disregard for anyone other than the current chosen few executives and their pets. In a decent company, people being laid off are treated with respect, and allowed at least a few minutes (either escorted or unescorted) to retrieve personal items. Electronic access is often disabled while employees are in their termination meetings (yes, this is possible even for large layoffs). L3Harris is too rude, cheap and incompetent to organize respectful layoffs; the managers and HR employees who want to do it better are squashed by corporate practices and have to seek (or sneak!) opportunities to display their humanity.
They do that deliberately to intimidate the others into staying in line They like doing it. It makes them feel like tough guys. They get off on it.
Was laid off in 2021. They wanted to do this exact same thing to me but I protested repeatedly that I didn't want anyone to touch my stuff. They relented and actually gave me a couple of boxes and I took care of it myself. I carried out one box and the other person carried out the other.
When I was at the former L-3 one guy got walked on on a PIP. He had been there for years, had a large cube full of 40 years worth of cr-p. Some poor schlub had to box it up.
My boss refused to do it. Luckily one of my friends did this for me, then when the tool crib manager brought out my toolbox they f***ked up my toolbox. Big surprise, L3H refused to pay for the damage.
Couldnt you simply text or email your manager to box your things up for you and then mail it to your home? Otherwise isnt it illegal for them to keep your property?
They also usually walk you to a different building than your own to do it. My building’s conference room was used for layoffs for people from a different building.
The obvious reason is that they don’t want you tampering or sabotaging. This is fair, but it’s also why I don’t have any personal stuff in my office when everyone else in my department does.
This is why I never keep anything personal at work, and never ever anything on a company computer.
To answer why...typically they are afraid you might delete files, cause problems, etc. Would anyone do that...and then try and use them as a reference for a new job...eh...people aren't as smart as they should be
