I have friends at Chevron. They are 3-4 years behind on offshoring and downsizing high cost country staffing. They are catching up now.

I’ll say the downsizing process at Chevron is inhumane. People are applying for their jobs. They know the number of jobs to be filled in the new org, look around and count how many people are competing for them, do the math, get stressed, and are now in a waiting game that is about to end. We all know that the managers making the decisions already know who they want in each position but the process strings it out causing unneeded stress on people. Some favorites are getting a heads up not to worry, thereby putting more stress on those that haven’t been given such a message. I assume the process is to put a veneer of fairness on the whole thing.

Whereas at Exxon, we know who we want, we go behind closed doors and make the decisions, and then let everyone know within a couple of days. It may be paternalistic, but it is quick and more honest.

American big oil all following the same playbook.

Remind me how ExxonMobil is leveraging it's unique position and size + scale?
