Employment and AI - beginning of work force shift downward

Slowly things are coming out how AI will affect technical workforce. Microsoft, Meta and Google announced reducing workforce already.

An article from Amazon CEO:

When will Cisco announce similar moves? Or has it already?

Advice to the young, leave tech and focus on Blue Collar job.

The irony is many of those jobs go unfilled because no one wants to do that kind of work either. My previous and now non-existent A/C company got down to one tech and he had to buy his own tools.

Engineers are mo--ns. Creating AI has obvious benefits but in creating this monster, engineers have destroyed the future of engineering and ended most of their career opportunities. Isn’t this the definition of hubris? Someone explain to me how computer engineering continues to exist as a career path for the next generation if 90% of the jobs, especially the jobs that new graduates need to start the advancement of their careers, are gone? AI may bring about revolutions in science (like protein folding) but what happens years from now when no one knows how this stuff works anymore other than AI itself and that same AI starts misbehaving?

@dc Already have seen a few comments in our repos with this agenda - "its AI, sorry, and lemme fix"

Finance is pushing this. Hard. I expect the next two LR's in finance will be heavily focused on roles being replaced with AI models (that will surely be faulty).

Can't wait for an Engineering team say, "that bug isn't our fault, it was the AI"

Then the comparison of bug metric trends for AI vs human

Then when Eng teams get reorg'd a bunch and ownership of an AI agent is unclear, and Eng can't fix a bug b/c it was written by an AI that no one can access.

Grab the popcorn. There's no way that Cisco will be proactive here; they will over rotate on AI and will correct it a few years too late.

AI doesn't have to completely replace you

it just has to be good enough to be paired with low-cost talent overseas to provide the equivalent output

these trends create bizarre incentives for North American devs...its actually in your interest to make sure your code is as cryptic, buggy and convoluted as possible as a way to keep you relevant past your sell-by date

CEO of Amazon mentioning headcount will reduce substantially soon... and we know which company will follow the suit

Buckle up everyone, white collar jobs are about to be in the biggest squid games of all time.

The JassHole just posted that Amazon will be conducting MASS LAYOFFS due to AI...
Amazon is Cooked
Is all of Tech Cooked?
Time to jump ship to AI companies as much as possible...or find a new path in life? or just hold on to dear life??
Honestly the claim that AI is working and we can just always reduce headcount...isn't this a hoax to investors???

J2 is all-in on AI, and future of his career depends on its success.

He has stated publicly AI can reduce workforce by 30%+

J2 has said many times that they are planning to have AI do 50% of coding so 50% of DEs & BU will be given a choice to find another opportunity within Cisco or leave in good terms. SBG will be the first group to try this.
