Heard they going to mandate WYW minimum 4 days in office. Finally it is happening.

Really excited to work with the regionals folks Face to Face again. Look forward to the luncheons with them. No more afternoon naps for them to show off!
@16w There goes the competitive edge to work here. We will see how long this policy lasts with the turnover as people leave for better offers. WYW was the only reason to stay for a lot of people. The company has been dying for some time though. They just shuffling chairs around on the Titanic.
Very glad to be connected with our regional folks. They get a chance to view the factory shopfloor and understand the constraints hopefully. Great move by BB.
@dn It's so you can collaborate with other people and teams on site that have zero relevance to you for getting your job done. Makes total sense.
We all saw this coming, but fu-k me, this su-ks. I've hired people with a posting saying 'Remote' and that was 80% of why they specifically wanted the job and accepted it. Now I'm essentially changing the terms of their agreement. How is that fair or legal?
@qc What happens to remote near people that live close enough but never come in? Is it just hybrid people being forced to go to 4 days now. Also they need to go to assigned desks if we are basically in the office every single day now. Hot desks make zero sense now that everyone will have to come in on the same days.
@da So happy people like you have left out beautiful state. Hopefully you went somewhere like Florida or Texas. Truly he-l on earth. Loser.
@tv It's not really hybrid if it's 4 days in the office what a joke. And are they having everyone on the same 4 days? They don't have enough desks if everyone shows up on the same day. They may need to open back up the other floors that are closed and buildings.
I’ve heard the vague timeline of “fall” for implementation. Guess we’ll see on Monday if they send out the email. The whole forced relocation thing is ridiculous if true. We will be bleeding talent, which I assume is what BB wants.
I’ll believe it when I see an announcement. The topic seems to be avoided in townhalls, and turnover at the top keeps happening. Many things we work on like deployments, spins, new systems, effective reorgs, etc. go years without completion. I don’t believe 3M has the leadership to execute and sustain a RTO. IT freezes on many things, constant strategy changes and so on. I don’t see RTO happening. Partially an inability to execute and perhaps partially so employees don’t see how gutted the center would be after so many cuts.
@13b unfortunately BB works long hours but gets 20 mill to inflict his misery. He expects everyone to work the "flexible" hours for free. Don't oblige giving in to a guy who looks at 3Ms culture with disdain. Even mockingly deriding Minnesota Nice. Mr. Minnesota Nasty deserves no loyalty. Let him boil on his yacht in Florida whilst contemplating why Bryan Hanson at 3M spin SOLV is getting twice his bucks for half the work
Mikey was a Peter principle buffoon, but at least he knew enough about 3Ms culture to know WFH could work for employees who networked with people in Asia and Europe.
Tireman couldn't understand this dynamic and was always complaining about empty seats at his raucous town halls.
BB is a short-termer. Maybe 3 more years but I suspect 2. He's here to collect his annual 20 million and breakup what's left of 3M. He could care less about WYW and can't be bothered with the hoi polloi in the warehouses and production plants and labs.
@13b exactly. And the reverse is also true. The us counterparts will now need the extra time in morning for commute, which further cuts into the time window that is available for global meetings. The window gets condensed from both ends. Hard to get all that collaboration time in when sitting in traffic.
Awesome. So how are we supposed to handle international calls when forced back into local office hours? Being in Europe, I’ll have 1-2 hours a day for my American friends with whom I work 80% of my time.
Does anyone recognise we are working flexible times from home, early in the morning and late in the evenings, to adhere to global timezones?
Happy times! I’ll go back, sure, but honestly, it will make things worse for the company. Don’t get it..
Quite simply, BB does not like to pay severance. He wants experienced employees to leave in disgust rather than give them 6 or more months of salary to be canned. BB is likely fuming every day from his Florida yacht while Bryan makes a cool 40MM (2x his salary) running SOLV.
Stick around and make them can you. And never work a minute past 40 hours a week. Remember, bosses have to commit to the same output even with fewer employees. BB will fire a boss who isn't meeting his outrageously stretch goals. Witness Tireman.
Some people were approved to work remote long before WYW came along, such as for medical reasons or military families. They aligned their careers to positions posted as 'remote' that working long distance didn't negatively impact the specific role they perform. Totally agree the entire WYW needs to be rethought for the masses, but still believe many roles are fine remotely.
And 2 years for people to relocate if distant? That's excessively long given the 3 weeks for parents to figure out childcare options. Give distant people 6 months. Would cut excessively travel bills as a bonus.
How absolutely cruel to enforce something like this in August with so many parents who have. Literally no options. Summer care programs sign up is in January. There's no way a parent can pivot this quickly in August. And no that doesn't mean parents are caring for kids vs working. Some kids just need someone in the residence but are otherwise self sufficient.
@xq, mentoring is great, but unless I get paid extra to train people who don't report to me they can F right off.
I've been begging for a promotion and they won't give it to me because apparently it's too hard to get VP approval.
The VP can come down and train people, is that's the case, because it's not my job.
I know of some WFH regional people who truly embrace it. These people get to enjoy comfort and convenience. The flexibility of running errands during day time. Participate in exercises, and even go to enjoy golf sessions during office peak. WYW is great!
There are some positions where mentoring is not nearly as effective over the screens versus sitting side by side. Technical in particular.
WYW was fantastic during the pandemic! Finally 3M did one thing right!
But in today’s environment, most companies are requiring folks to come back to the office. I am not sure if there is a marked improvement in collaboration by being in the office …
I sure how hope if they are mandating back that they give everyone their own desk without having to reserve or share. I hope they also magically have meeting space to allow for all our calls. And most importantly, I sure hope they readjust expectations that being on calls starting 6am is not realistic when needing to somehow commute to the office. I know Tireman is gone so perhaps no one cares about safety anymore but expecting to be on calls while driving to the office is a huge lawsuit waiting to happen.
If they do this, they’ll have to change the name as it clearly will not be Work YOUR Way. It will be Work the CEO’s Way. Glad I don’t work there any more as I Work My Way.
@qc this is very close to what my VP has told our team. The mention for move to MN requirement was true for Austin campus as well was my understanding. In my function we have some very senior people living remotely and the rules had better apply to them as well, but somehow I think it won’t.
I hear announcement will go out 7/7. 4 days return to the office starting August 1st. All remote workers will have 2 years to relocate to the Maplewood headquarters by August 2027 or they will be terminated.
@da I don’t like to talk like this normally.. however, you are an id--t
All managers in our team are remote. So we have to come to office to talk with them same way we talked so far? Make it make sense.
Meanwhile they sell 80% of our international offices. So only people in st paul have to go into the office?
Lol su-kers that stayed in minnesota. Living in a former corn field in the worst weather in the country paying taxes thru their ar-e!!! Losers
I'll be holding out until the big wigs out me on a PIP.
With Saint Peter ousted, there isn't much of a drive for his trained pack of barking seals to hang around him at the Center Cafe.
They still haven't decided what to do with distant remote employees.
I live in St Paul, my boss is in Poland, and other people on my team are in Poland and France.
Who is going to complain if I'm not in the office?
Yes they will be it's matter of when it's going to happen
