Intel’s Sheltered Employee Retirement Medical Account (SERMA): SERMA is a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) provided by Intel for eligible U.S. retirees hired before January 1, 2014. It is a fund established at retirement, based on years of service, to reimburse eligible medical insurance premiums for retirees, their qualified dependents, and spouse/domestic partner. The account is not taxable, has no cash value, and is governed by Intel’s Summary Plan Description (SPD). Funds are available 45–60 days post-retirement and can be used until exhausted, with an annual claim submission period ending May 31 of the following year. Retirees can opt out to access federal premium tax credits but lose access to SERMA for that year.
