Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

genzs freaked out

Gen Z's heightened layoff fears: A new report indicates that 64% of Gen Z workers are worried about being laid off in the next year, a significant increase from previous months and notably higher than other generations.

Disparity between perception and data: While Gen Z's fears are rising, broader labor market indicators show relative strength with low unemployment and increased job vacancies, though recent job cut announcements contribute to anxiety.

Industry and experience play a role: Much of Gen Z's concern stems from their overrepresentation in sectors like tech, retail, media, and government, which have experienced recent job losses, and younger workers are often "last hired, first fired."

Compounding financial pressures: Gen Z is entering the workforce with substantial student debt, facing high living costs, especially in major cities, where income growth hasn't kept pace with housing prices.

AI fuels job insecurity: The rapid rise of artificial intelligence contributes significantly to Gen Z's anxiety, as many worry about their entry-level jobs being reimagined or eliminated by AI, despite some experts suggesting its immediate job-ki-ling impact might be overstated.

@ej - shove it....
If you can get over yourself, you might have a future.
Know this, when I find out who you are, I knows what your future will be

It's odd that people equate YoS with a lack of learning / growth etc. It's entirely possible to do all that fun stuff at one company. Move up, go lateral, get another degree, get another cert, it's really not that hard. In fact, it's probably a lot easier for most people to upskill when they aren't uprooted. If you want to change jobs every 8 days, that's cool, you do you, but there are options.

Telling Gen X welcome to adulthood? You realize that the youngest Gen X is 45, right? We've been working in the corporate world for almost 25 years now. We'll be ok, boomer. Now, go buy some more adult diapers and get scammed out of your savings.

Gen x and Gen z, welcome to the adult work world. Nothing is guaranteed. Keep learning, keep growing, remember that the best things in life occur outside of work.

As someone with a long tenure, I agree that you should job hop and move across companies. 3-5 years is max at any one employer. If you stay in one place, your pay will never grow at the same rate if you were to change jobs. There's no benefit for loyalty or building a career at one company- only downsides.

That's for sure. The kiddies have PLENTY of time to make their way in the economy. It's the people that feel like it's too late to start over that have good reason to stress.

I don't think Gen X feels all that comfortable right now either.

Take it from someone who has been here for decades. Keep job hopping to other companies, improving your income and career each time. Use WF for educational reimbursement then move on. This is from someone been here for 40 years and getting ready to retire with just a free checking account and gift. There has to be better companies that appreciate their employees more. Don’t have regrets like me.
