If we looked at an employee “intensity”, what would the best denominator be? How would we best account for divestments and M&A? Revenue? BOE equivalent? Genuinely curious to better understand the trend.

After the layoff of 2011, EM executives declared that they learned their lesson and would never ramp up employee headcount ever again. Increases in workload would be covered by hiring contract staff.

Those same EM executives lead the hiring binge of 2018, that lead to the massive layoff of December 2020.

Get big bonus for leading the hiring effort then same id--ts get big bonuses for leading the layoff they caused.

Cuts would be even more dramatic if it showed HC10 headcount including contractors. The slash and burn to ash of HC10 workforce --- employees and hat contractors --- is massive.

it'd be good to overlay this chart with the chart of spend on oil as the percentage of GDP. i'd bet big money they would be strongly correlated.

I would like to see the same graph but showing only HC10 employees. Now that would be interesting.

And yet, no significant layoffs.

How do they do it?!

Would like to see that paralleled against profits and CEO income.
