Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Nice employees finish last so you have to be cutthroat at exxon.

So i got my review today and I was dropped to NI. I was excellent last year but now falling. The reasons for my decline were of course vague but included communication, and attention to detail. I helped out many groups last year and got over loaded. I was surprised to learn that some of my knowledgeable others trashed me in the ranking. One group did not finish a project on time and I was blamed. Two of the engineers I helped threw me under the bus. I thought we worked well together and I could trust these two but I was wrong. The supervisor mentioned things only they knew about. I covered for the engineers and provided excellent feedback for these two snakes. I was even approached by my supervisor and their manager to provide information about these two. I told the supervisor and manager that the engineers were progressing the projects. In reality the engineers were slacking off and doing nothing. One engineer took off for their child and doctors appointments without informing the manager. The other would not come in and leave early. I would cover the work for these two a holes. I feel like an id--t for what I did and what happened. Now when I see these two they seem scared of me and look guilty. I told them I dropped in ranking and they said they could not see why I dropped. I could have sc--wed these two but did not and this is what I got. So being fair and nice at exxon does not pay. Trust no one at exxon there are no good people.

This is the truth after having been part of the assessment process. Where your boss puts you in the pre assessment is the most critical aspect of where your final ranking is. Everything can be smoke for an excellent as long as you start there and you boss makes a reasonable sounding case for you.

20 years ago I was rated by my work output. We had no supervisors as we worked for the group we were in. No kissing a s tk tge bosses. We had a manager and we were rated in our group. Even if the manager did not like an employee they could not personally drop them. It was a more fair system. We had employees that were absolutely a holes but worked hard and innovative. Now if you don't chit chat with the supervisors you are finished. I never have nor needed to kiss a s. The unfairness is sickening and that is why employees leave. Exxon is a conflict of interests when it comes to the rankings. Exxon preaches ethics, personal conflicts of interest and fairness but allows families and friends to coerce, conspire against those outsiders. The whole system should be gutted. It creates an unfair advantage in ranking. I see it all the time at baytown and baton rouge. The arrogance of the family members and good ol boy system. Many young employees that quit learned they had no chance against the friends and family of exxon. One engineer who was more experienced and qualified for a promotion was passed over for a son of the plant manager. I saw some ladies who had no engineer degrees placed in engineer positions. A technician with an engineering degree was not selected.Good looking ladies also have an advantage. Bottom line exxon is a dysfunctional, injustice, corrupt, s hit the hole. I used to like to work here but now I can't stand it.I am at 702 days till freedom. I speak tge truth from 27 years at this place. I have seen the horror from Clinton, baytown, urc, and baton rouge. There is no site safe from this anymore.

Number one thing factor in your ranking is the initial rank list put together by your supervisor. If you are at the bottom of that you don't have any hope. Others have said this, but KO feedback doesn't mean much. Politics play a role as your supervisor will put together their list in way that they think will compare well to others in the pool.

Long story short your supervisor felt there were other people in your group who performed better than you and/or would compare more favorably to other people in the rank pool. I doubt it has much to do with KO feedback.

It doesn't matter if someone works or not. Protected employees do not work and sc--w off. I am not saying it is right but it is not my job to ensure others work. The supervisors should police these people. Instead of going behind the back the supervisor or team member should let the slacker know. The sneaky backstabbing tactics are the problem. I am not saying laziness should be tolerated but the employee made aware. Again it is the way it is handled that builds trust. remember. Weam exxon says its the way you approach others and work together. Everyone around me is untrustworthy and a snake. This just feeds exxons hunger game. Exxon wants us at each others throats.

The worst part: the walking, talking piles of dog isht masquerading as leaders consider this a feature, not a bug. You get demotivated and quit and they fill their greedy pockets with a portion of the delta between your cost and AI (another Indian). Totally revolting

Probably unpopular opinion but I’m not sure it’s “evil” or “f’ing others over” if other members of the team are not pulling their weight and causing a project to be delayed.

My attitude would be you’re responsible for your own performance, others should be too, and if they don’t perform then I will rightfully call you out to you and your supervisor. That’s called responsibility. Frankly your behavior shows bad judgment and a bit of juvenile thinking. We’re not here to cover for others like classmates against the big bad teacher but to progress a project, deal etc and to do so competently.

OP, that's typical and sad reality of Exxon as results of lack of job security (nsi) and force ranking.

Trust no one

Well In my case the bad feedback royally f Ed me. Trivial things that i thought did not matter sure mattered at ranking. I don't live my life by f uc king over employees or snitching on them. Even when the slimy supervisor was digging for dirt and gossip on others I did not play the game. I was told that if they were not giving me enough to do tj tell the supervisor because it would save me from being punished. It was like if you sc--w them over you can save yourself. Give me dirt on them before they sc--w you. This is a sick game exxon plays. I refuse to play their game. I will leave here with a clean conscience. I never f u credit anyone over in my career. I actually tried to protect and help others. Supposedly this is what weam is about but doesn't deliver. Exxon is truly f u cd as a company. I have seen it decline in the past 20 years. The ranking system becoming more corrupt. The families running baytown, baton rouge, mt belive. You cannot survive without connections or insiders. So now I just hide away from all the toxic persons. I will be dinged for not engaging enough next year. There are watchers who walk up and down the hall ways to see what employees are doing in the office. They also watch the labs too. One real a hole was timing bath room breaks. Of course if you are part of the family or protected you can take long smoke breaks, watch movies on your phone, or draw doodles all day at your desk. If you are protected you can work 6 hours, leave early, and wfh. When you see how injust it is at exxon you will give up.

Never "lie" or "shade the truth" about your colleagues' performance. If they "slack off" or fail in their "deliverables", they will also gaslight you as a knowledgeable other. Character means everything in "knowledgeable others".

Knowledgeable others mean absolutely nothing in rating and ranking. KO's can be used to justify NI or NSI but KO's will never get your rated higher. Politics and who you know will get you ranked excellent not KO's.

One of the lowest scores in the we are em survey is about recognition… the employees are trying to share that the appraisal system is not driving the right behaviors yet no one is listening…

Working as a team but individually ranked against each other.

You can’t have both.

The person who represents me in the ranking session is also in that ranking group.

How is that even remotely fair?
