UnitedHealth on Tuesday restored its full-year profit forecast that it suspended months ago, with a new outlook that revealed the billions of additional costs the company will face in the upcoming quarters.
The insurer projected full-year earnings per share of at least $16, well short of analysts' lowered estimates, while second-quarter profit fell short of expectations.
Company executives attributed the shortfall to underestimating medical costs, which are now expected to run $6.5 billion higher than initially projected.
